ROCHESTER, Mich. – Behind seven victories, including three from
Jennifer Oleksiak and two from
Elizabeth Bourgeois, the IUPUI women’s swimming and diving team was able to stay within striking distance of Summit League foe Oakland, but the Golden Grizzlies’ depth proved to be too much to overcome as the Jags fell 162.5 – 125.5 to Oakland Friday afternoon at the OU Aquatics Center.
Despite the loss, the Jags were able to put together some good swims in a setting that will serve as the site for the upcoming 2013 Summit League Championships Feb. 20-23.
“We swam really well in a lot of spots and competed well across the board” said head coach
Matt Bos. “We actually need to get some rest in the coming weeks so we can sharpen up and prepare to come back here and put together a strong championship meet.”
The Jaguars got off to a great start by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:47.38.
Alexus Laird started off strong in the backstroke as the Jags were in second after the first 50 yards, but at the midway point, the Jags sat in third. IUPUI quickly took the lead behind Bourgeois’ split of 25.00 in the 50 fly, and Oleksiak held on during the anchor leg to give the Jags the win.
In the first individual event, IUPUI took home a third-place finish as
Natalie Trout completed the 1000 freestyle in a personal-best time of 10:48.77, the eighth-best time in program history.
Margaret Barber posted the Jags first individual win of the day in the 200 freestyle touching the wall in 1:55.82, besting Oakland’s Karin Tomeckova by .17 seconds. Barber’s time became the fifth-best mark of her career and the seventh in school history.
The Jaguars went 1-2 in the 50 breast stroke as Oleksiak and
Mary Klueh posted times of 30.46 and 31.16, before Bourgeois earned the victory in the 100 fly. Bourgeois, IUPUI’s lone senior, clocked in at 57.57 to give the Jags their third individual win.
Another dual podium finish occurred for IUPUI as Laird and Barber went 2-3 in the 50 freestyle at 24.99 and 25.08, respectively, before
Madison Taylor and
Peyton Zehner did the same in the 100 freestyle with times of 53.71 and 54.86.
Laird added another second-place finish in the 100 back, before Oleksiak shattered her own record in the 100 breaststroke. Oleksiak’s previous school-record in the event was 1:06.91, and she went on to shave off more than one second off that time by posting a 1:05.85 to win the event over Klueh by nearly two seconds. Klueh’s second-place time of 1:07.77 equaled the eighth-best time in school history.
Bourgeois added her second individual victory of the day in the 50 fly with a time of 25.89, and the final individual victory of the day came from Oleksiak, who won the 200 IM in 2:09.96, the third-best time in the IUPUI record books.
The Jags return to Indiana and are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Butler Invite at Fishers High School. The meet is set to begin at Noon.
