ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland sharpshooter Travis Bader, who entered play leading the nation in three-point field goals made, hit two quick treys to start Thursday night's game against the Golden Grizzlies, prompting Head Coach Todd Howard to call timeout. It was only a precursor of what was to come.
Bader connected on a school record 11 threes and finished with 47 points as Oakland (9-13, 4-4 Summit) gunned down the Jaguars, 89-71. Senior
Sean Esposito led IUPUI with a career-high 21 points and
Donovan Gibbs added 15 as the Jaguars fell for the seventh time in as many games. Senior
Greg Rice added a career-high 10 assists to accompany eight points and four boards from the IUPUI backcourt.
Corey Petros had 12 points and 11 boards for the hosts in the win and Duke Mondy contributed 11 off the bench.
Despite falling behind 6-0, IUPUI (6-17, 1-8 Summit) answered to take a 12-10 lead on back-to-back Gibbs field goals, both assisted by Rice. However, Oakland scored the game's next six points, capped by a Bader trey, to ultimately take the lead for good. Oakland systematically pulled out to a 37-26 halftime lead, thanks to a pair of Mondy free throws with 0.1 seconds left before the break.
The second half seemed more like a glamorized game of H-O-R-S-E with both teams firing in shots from all distances and angles. IUPUI shot 62 percent after intermission, but not to be outdone, Oakland canned 63 percent of its field goal tries.
Oakland blew out to a 63-37 lead with 12:20 left when Ryan Bass threw down a two-handed alley-oop in transition, but the OU guard was assessed a technical in the process.
IUPUI took advantage of the momentum swing and scored the game's next eight points, including a Mitchell Patton putback. The Jaguars' offense continued to fire on all cylinders, cutting the lead back to 72-61 with 6:48 remaining when Esposito made one of his five triples.
The Jags had a chance to cut the lead back to single-digits, but Gibbs misfired on a rhythm wing three and Oakland immediately answered with a Bader trey at the other end. Bader closed the game by scoring 16 of Oakland's final 17 points, including hitting all six of his free throw attempts. His 47 points were the most by a Summit Leaguer since Ben Woodside scored 60 back on Dec. 12, 2008. His point total was also the most in Division I basketball this season.
Esposito, who was held scoreless in the first meeting between the two schools, made 7-of-13 shots and 5-of-11 treys to finished one point above his previous career-high. It was the 6-foot-3 guard's third 20+ scoring output of the season. Meanwhile, Gibbs was an efficient 7-of-11 up front as IUPUI finished the game shooting 54 percent from the floor. Patton narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and eight boards in a career-high 36 minutes work.
Oakland made 55.4 percent overall and 14-of-30 (46.7 percent) from three-point range. The Golden Grizzlies also dominated the glass, outrebounding IUPUI 37-18. OU outscored the Jaguars 17-6 on second chance points, thanks to 14 offensive caroms.
IUPUI will cap the two-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 26 when the Jaguars take on Fort Wayne inside the Hilliard Gates Center on the IPFW campus at 7:00 p.m.. That contest will be heard on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and on the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones as Scott McCauley (pxp) calls the action from courtside.
