INDIANAPOLIS - The remnants of Thursday night’s loss were gone as the IUPUI men’s basketball team came  out strong against reigning Summit League champion South Dakota State inside The Jungle on Saturday (Jan. 19) afternoon.  Despite a steady start, the Jaguars defense was unable to stop the high-powered SDSU offense in an 80-65 loss.

SDSU (15-6, 6-2 Summit) hit 59 percent from the floor in the first half and blew out to a 52-28 lead by halftime.

IUPUI (6-16, 1-7 Summit) junior guard P.J. Hubert opened up the Jags scoring with a three-point jumper just 30 seconds into the game and junior center Mitchell Patton followed with a jumper, giving the Jags its lone lead of the game at 5-2.

The Jaguars stayed in contact until Patton picked up his second personal foul and was sent to the sidelines. From there, SDSU scored 14 of the game's next 16 to take a commanding 24-10 lead.

Four different IUPUI players finished in double-digits, including double-doubles from Donovan Gibbs (14 pts, 10 reb) and Patton (17 pts, 11 reb). Greg Rice (17 pts) and Hubert (12 pts) also finished in double-figures. It was the second time this year that both Patton and Gibbs had a double-double in the same game as the duo also did so in the earlier win against Bowling Green.

However, the Jags defense was not able to hold off an unrelenting Jackrabbit offense in the first half. SDSU's decisive first half run included seven points from Brayden Carlson, highlighted by a dunk after breaking away on a steal. Sophomore forward Lyonell Gaines ended the 14-2 streak at the foul line.

After trailing by as many as 29, IUPUI showed signs of life, outscoring the Jackrabbits 37-28 in the second half. Patton got tangled up with SDSU's Jordan Dykstra while working along the baseline and immediately confronted the visiting big man. Although nothing came of the confrontation, it seemed to spark the Jaguars and invigorate an otherwise listless group.

With Patton leading the way, the Jaguars closed the game on a 16-2 burst, playing in The Jungle for the first time in over a month. The 6-foot-9 lefty hit 8-of-13 shots to accompany his 11 boards and three blocked shots, while playing just 21 minutes due to foul problems. It was Patton's first time in the starting lineup since Dec. 15 as he's battled multiple injuries since the start of the season.

Rice had five assists and no turnovers and was one of three IUPUI starters forced to play all 40 minutes.

IUPUI won the glass 40-36 and outscored the Jacks 34-24 in the paint.

Carlson led the Jackrabbits' offense with 18 points and seven rebounds and senior guard Nate Wolters added 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds with eight NBA scouts in attendance. Tony Fiegen (10), Chad White (10) and Jordan Dykstra (11) also scored in double-digits for SDSU.

SDSU hit six first half treys and finished 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from deep. It was the Jacks' fifth straight win over IUPUI.

IUPUI will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24 when the Jaguars head north to take on Oakland University inside the O'rena. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Rochester, Mich.. That game can be heard on WNDE.com and on the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action with pregame coverage beginning at approximately 6:45 p.m..
