IUPUI (6-15, 1-6 Summit) will be looking to snap a season-long five-game losing skid following Thursday's 78-40 loss to North Dakota State inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Junior Mitchell Patton hit 6-of-13 field goals en route to a team-high 17 points off the bench and junior
P.J. Hubert added eight points in the loss. IUPUI fell into an early 10-0 hole and yielded a 22-0 run spanning the two halves against one of the nation's top defensive teams.
South Dakota State (14-6, 5-2 Summit) is coming off a hard fought 58-53 win at Western Illinois on Thursday night, behind a 22-point, 6-assist, 5-rebound effort from NBA-prospect Nate Wolters. Jordan Dykstra chipped in 12 points in the win and both Tony Fiegen and Chad White added 10 apiece.
Wolters, who eclipsed the 2,000-point mark on Thursday, is one of the nation's top players and comes in netting 21.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. He also leads the Jackrabbits in steals (30), minutes (37.6 mpg) and free throws made (97). Dykstra is averaging 12.8 points and a team-high 6.9 boards per game and Fiegen is also in double-digits at 10.4 points per game.
IUPUI is 6-5 all-time against the Jackrabbits, but has lost four straight in the series, including all three meetings last season. The Jaguars are 4-1 all-time in Indianapolis against SDSU with the lone loss coming last season in overtime.
This year's Jaguars' have been decimated by injuries, leaving Head Coach
Todd Howard with just seven healthy scholarship players. All three freshmen are sitting out the season and expected to redshirt while top returning scorer
Ian Chiles is shelved for the year due to injury. Like Chiles, sophomore swingman
Marcellus Barksdale is lost for the year with an injury and the road got even tougher when
John Hart was declared ineligible at the start of the spring semester.
Patton is the lone current player averaging better than double-figures, checking in at 12.7 points per game. His 28 minutes against NDSU on Thursday were his most since Dec. 1 as the Vincennes, Ind.-native has battled injuries for the majority of the season. Junior
Donovan Gibbs averages 9.3 points and a team-high 6.3 boards per game and sophomore guard
Jordan Shanklin comes in at 7.4 points per game.
Shanklin is one of five Jaguars to have hit at least 20 threes this season as IUPUI is shooting better than 37 percent from deep this year. South Dakota State enters Saturday's game almost equally as accurate from three-point range, hitting 36.7 percent from downtown. The Jacks have four players with at least 25 treys, led by Chad White's 40 and Dykstra's 37.
