OMAHA - The IUPUI men's soccer team fell into a two goal hole in the first half and never came off the mat as the Jaguars lost to Summit League newcomer Omaha, 2-0 on Saturday (Sept. 29). The loss dropped the Jaguars to 1-1 in Summit League play and snapped the squad's three-game unbeaten streak.

UNO (3-4-1, 1-0-1 Summit) went in front in the 20th minute on Chava Garcia's third score of the year. Giovanni Giattino chipped a ball over the Jaguars' back line in the direction of Garcia, who held off a defender before ripping a shot past Eduardo Cortes for the eventual game-winner.

Cortes made a pair of brilliant saves to keep the deficit at one as he made a sprawling stop of a Emir Alihodzic drive midway through the first half and a flailing save of a Felipe da Silva attempt later in the half.

The homestanding Mavericks solved Cortes again in the 39th minute to cap the day's scoring. Giattino won a 50-50 ball and shifted a pass to Jordan Gealy, who then set up Devin Diego's header at the far post.

Despite being shutout, IUPUI (4-7-2, 1-1) had plenty of chances to score in seeking the team's first road win of the year. In the 17th minute, senior Ryan Robinson had a header cleared off the back line after he had just replaced Alejandro Martignon on the pitch.

In the 55th minute, Summit League scoring leader Kyle Hyland had a shot stopped by a defender after UNO goalkeeper Matt Grosey was beaten on the play. IUPUI was later whistled offside on the ensuing corner kick.

The Jags' best scoring chance of the day came in the 74th minute when IUPUI was awarded a penalty kick after Grosey was called for a foul inside the penalty box. However, Hyland's PK attempt was unsuccessful when Grosey made a diving save to keep the shutout intact.

UNO outshot the Jaguars 16-8 overall and 7-4 on frame as Hyland was the lone IUPUI player with multiple attempts. Alihodzic led all players with four shots from his midfield spot. Cortes finished with five saves in the loss while Grosey made two saves in the shutout victory.

IUPUI will return to action when the Jaguars return home to host Oakland University as part of a soccer doubleheader at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 6. The men's match is expected to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.. The game can be watched online or on mobile devices and iPads as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service. Scott McCauley (pxp) and former Jag Yogi Snider (analyst) will call the action from high above the pitch that evening.
