MEN'S SOCCER TEAM TO HIT THE ROAD FOR 38TH PANTHER INVITATIONAL

Jaguars to play host UW-Milwaukee (Aug. 31) and Canisius (Sept. 2) this weekend

8/30/2012 1:17:00 PM

MILWAUKEE - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open the second weekend of the 2012 season by participating in this weekend's 38th Panther Invitational, hosted by UW-Milwaukee at Engelmann Stadium. Head coach Isang Jacob's squad will battle host Milwaukee on Friday (Aug. 31) at 7:30 p.m. before playing Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 2) at noon. Both matches can be seen for free on the Horizon League Network and live stats will be available shortly after kickoff of each contest.

The Panther Invitational is the longest running in-season Division I soccer tournament in the United States.

IUPUI (1-1) has been on both sides of a shutout decision so far this year, blanking Detroit 2-0 in the season opener before falling at Butler by the same score earlier this week. Senior Kyle Hyland has accounted for both IUPUI scores this year while junior forward Ian Block has the team's lone assist thus far. Freshman Eduardo Cortes has been brilliant in goal, yielding just two goals while averaging 5.5 saves per contest. Gregory Efiom and Devon Orben lead the Jaguars with four shots each to start the year while Hyland has put a team-high three shots on frame.

Milwaukee (1-1) is led offensively by Declan Rodriguez, who's tallied two goals in the Panthers' first two matches. Both Laurie Bell and Cody Banks each have one score this year with Bell netting the game-winner on a PK against Northern Kentucky. In goal, John Shakon has allowed four goals in two matches while making five saves. Friday's match marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

On Sunday, IUPUI will face Canisius for the first-time in school history as well. The Golden Griffins are 0-0-2 to start the year, having played both Buffalo and Robert Morris to draws. Asani Samuels has Canisius' only goal of the year while Kareem Gray has a 0.41 goals against average and 11 saves in net.
