VALPARAISO, Ind. - Seeking its first win over Valparaiso since 2004, the IUPUI women's soccer team fell short in a 1-0 decision in both teams' season opener at Brown Field on Friday (Aug. 17) night. VU's Luisa Desario tallied the game-winner in the 59th minute to account for the evening's only offense.
Despite being outshot 26-5 and allowing 12 corner kicks, IUPUI junior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman was nearly flawless in net in her 2012 debut, making nine saves. The lone blemish came early in the second half as Catherine Terrell slotted a pass to Desario, setting up a 1-v-1 opportunity against Guzman. The VU striker slid a shot just inside the right post from 10 yards out for her first goal of the year.
Offensively, the Jaguars' chances were few and far between. IUPUI had two early corner kicks, but was unable to get a shot attempt out of either chance. Later, senior
Kelli Parks misfired on a shot in the 15th minute to account for the Jags lone attempt in the first 40 minutes. Later, junior
Sarah Carlisle narrowly missed putting a header on frame just before halftime.
In the second half, reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year
Taylor Heidorn put a pair of strikes on goal, both of which were stopped by VU goalkeeper Kristen Manski. Four different Crusader players attempted four shots with Jordyn Ryfiak putting three attempts on target.
Guzman's nine saves were two shy of a career-high, set last season against Western Illinois.
IUPUI will cap the busy weekend on Sunday when the Jaguars host Miami (Ohio) at 1:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Like all home games this season, admission is free and open to the public. Live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com at the start of the contest.
