TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI basketball team will have its hands full when it takes on Summit League leader Oral Roberts on Thursday (Feb. 9) night inside the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Okla.. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Eastern with the game being televised on Fox College Sports. In Indianapolis, the contest can be heard on WNDE 1260 AM as Scott McCauley (pxp) calls the action from courtside. His call can also be heard on WNDE.com and through the free iHeartRadio app available for smartphones.
IUPUI (10-15, 4-9 Summit) comes in on a modest two-game winning streak and will be trying to snap ORU's (21-5, 13-1 Summit) 20-game home winning streak.
The Jaguars recently discovered a penchant for winning close game, picking off home wins over Oakland and IPFW by a combined seven points. On Saturday, senior guard
Stephen Thomas played the role of hero by scoring 14 of his 20 points in the second half, including three threes in the final 3:16. The Jaguars erased a 10-point deficit over the final 6:28 of the game, culminating in Thomas' game-winning three with 22 seconds to play. Senior
Alex Young scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first half and classmate
Christian Siakam added 15 points and seven boards in the victory.
Despite hitting just 39.6 percent from the field overall, IUPUI sank 5-of-10 threes and held IPFW to 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Jaguars' senior trio of Siakam, Thomas and Young has carried the load in the month of February, accounting for 95 of the team's 165 points in the two games to start the month. Siakam is riding an especially impressive two-game stretch in which he's posted 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 59.3 percent from the field. Young has continued his torrid scoring pace, upping his career total to 2,142 to match former Valparaiso standout Bryce Drew for the No. 6 spot on the league's all-time scoring list. The 6-foot-6 lefty is currently 13th in the country in scoring average at 20.4 points per game and one of four Summit Leaguers among the nation's top 13 in scoring.
IUPUI is seeking revenge against Oral Roberts after the Golden Eagles won in Indianapolis, 81-71 back on Jan. 14. In that game, ORU junior guard Warren Niles led four Golden Eagles in double-digits with 23 points and both Damen Bell-Holter and Michael Craion finished with 18 points in the double-digit loss. Young led the Jaguars with 27 points and sophomore guard
Ian Chiles added 10 as IUPUI's only double-digit scorers. IUPUI led by three with 7:40 left after Young threw down a two-handed alley-oop, but ORU responded with a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to seize control of the contest.
IUPUI hasn't won in Tulsa since a 2004 double overtime thriller and has lost seven straight regular season games at the Mabee Center. IUPUI is 10-21 all-time against ORU and lost four straight to the Golden Eagles.
