CEDAR CITY, Utah - The IUPUI basketball team will cap its two-game roadtrip on Saturday (Feb. 11) night when the Jaguars take on Southern Utah (13-12, 8-7 Summit) inside Centrum Arena in a 9:30 p.m. Eastern tipoff. The contest can be heard locally on WNDE 1260 with Scott McCauley (pxp) describing the action. His call can also be heard on WNDE.com or through the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones.
IUPUI (10-16, 4-10 Summit) is coming off a heartbreaking 76-74 overtime loss to Oral Roberts on Thursday (Feb. 9) night. ORU senior guard Roderick Pearson hit a running one-hander after driving down the right side of the lane and flipping a prayer up on the rim over
Ian Chiles.
Senior
Alex Young helped send the game to overtime with a huge four-point play with 34.4 seconds left, tying the score at 65 all. On the final possession of regulation, ORU's Dominique Morrison missed a tough 10-footer and Warren Niles' desperation attempt fell well short of the mark. In overtime, ORU surged out to a six-point lead before IUPUI clawed all the way back to tie the game on a Chiles free throw with 21 seconds left. However, given new life, Pearson hit the game-winner to beat the Jaguars for the second straight time at the buzzer on the road. Young finished with a game-high 34 points, including a career-high six treys in nine attempts. Morrison had 23 for the Golden Eagles, 21 of which came after halftime.
Five other players finished with 11 points including
Stephen Thomas and
Christian Siakam for IUPUI. The defeat dropped the Jaguars to 2-8 this year in games decided by five points or less and kept IUPUI winless on the road. ORU extended its home winning streak to 21 straight.
Young's finished the night in sole possession of sixth-place on The Summit League's career scoring list having upped his career total to 2,176. Thursday's game was Young's sixth outing of 30 points or more and 49th time in his career he's scored 20 or better. He's now ranked 10th nationally in scoring average this season at 20.9 points per game and is one of five Summit Leaguers to rank among the nation's top 25 in scoring average.
IUPUI will be seeking to avenge an earlier loss to Southern Utah on Saturday after the Thunderbirds claimed a 72-64 win in Indianapolis on Jan. 12 of this season. Ray Jones, Jr. led the Thunderbirds with 21 points, seven boards and seven assists in that win and both Ramell Taylor and Jackson Stevenett finished with 19 apiece. Chiles led IUPUI with 14 points while Siakam, Thomas and Young all closed with 10 points. Young was limited to just 21 minutes before fouling out and turned the ball over five times in that loss. The Jaguars led for just eight seconds in the entire game, taking a brief two-point lead with 12 minutes to play before Damon Heuir stuck a three at the other end.
Stevenett leads three T-Birds in double-digits in scoring at 13.9 points and 5.7 boards per game while Taylor is second at 12.4 points per game. Heuir leads SUU in threes made (25) and comes in netting 10.2 points per game. Jones, Jr. ranks among The Summit leaders in assists (122) and is scoring 9.9 points per game. IUPUI hasn't lost in Cedar City since 2006.
