IUPUI (6-10, 1-2 Summit) stayed on the winning side of the ledger on Thursday (Dec. 27) night when the Jaguars closed the game on a 21-2 run to knock off Fort Wayne, 88-74 inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Senior
John Hart led five Jaguars in double-digits with 26 points and
Greg Rice added 16 points and seven assists.
Lyonell Gaines (12),
Donovan Gibbs (12) and Mitchell Patton (10) also finished in double-figures as the Jaguars shot 72 percent from the floor in the second half and a sizzling 58.9 percent for the game.
Hot shooting has been the key for the Jaguars of late as IUPUI has connected on 49.1 percent of its three-point attempts over the past three games, including wins over Fort Wayne and Ball State. Rice (5-of-8), Hart (7-of-13) and
Jordan Shanklin (5-of-8) have all hit better than half of their three-point attempts over the past three games while senior
Sean Esposito (9-of-19) has been just off their pace.
On the inside, sophomore
Lyonell Gaines has hit for double-digits in each of the past two games with Patton's playing time limited due to injury. Not coincidentally, IUPUI has handed out 34 assists in the past two wins while turning the ball over just 23 times.
Hart upped his scoring average to 15.4 points per game and remains sixth in The Summit League in that category.
Oakland has alternated wins and losses since the start of December and is coming off a 73-63 loss at Western Illinois on Thursday night. Junior sharpshooter Travis Bader leads the Golden Grizzlies in scoring (19.8 ppg), threes made (56) and minutes played (38.4 mpg). Sophomore Corey Petros is second on the squad in scoring (13.6) and second in The Summit in rebounding at 7.7 caroms per game. Duke Mondy is also averaging double-digits at 11.9 points per game and leads the league in steals by a wide margin with 42.
With Thursday's win, IUPUI has won five straight on the Indiana Pacers' home floor and is 8-3 all-time when hosting games at The Fieldhouse. Among the current five-game winning streak at Bankers Life Fieldhouse was a 100-88 defeat of Oakland on Feb. 5, 2011. IUPUI is 15-22 all-time against Oakland as the two schools split last year's season series with each team claiming a home win. The most recent meeting was a 79-75 IUPUI victory inside The Jungle on Feb. 1, 2012.
