VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota senior guard Juevol Myles scored 19 of career-high 26 points in the first half, lifting the host Coyotes to an 88-68 win over IUPUI inside the DakotaDome on Saturday (Dec. 1) night.

IUPUI (3-6, 0-2 Summit) senior guard John Hart scored a career-high 29 points in the loss, but was the lone Jaguar to reach double-figures. His 29-point effort was the highest output by an IUPUI player since Alex Young dropped 34 at Oral Roberts on Feb. 9 last season.

However, for the second straight game, the Jaguars fell into a huge first half hole and was unable to dig out after intermission.

"Well, we aren't very happy with this trip. It's too early for (Summit) league games when you're missing three major rotation guys," head coach Todd Howard said. "Just like on Thursday, a quick three-minute stretch continues to doom us."

South Dakota shot a blistering 71 percent from the floor in the first half with both Myles and Karim Rowson doing the bulk of the damage. Myles, a jet quick 6-foot-1 guard, was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor in the first half and Rowson had 13 points and five boards before the break. Despite the hosts' hot shooting, IUPUI pulled within two at 29-27 on a Hart drive with 6:18 left before the break, but the Coyotes closed the half with a 20-6 blitz to take a 49-33 halftime advantage.

IUPUI got as close as 14 after halftime at 56-42 with 15:28 to play when #P.J. Hubert# stroked an open trey, but USD (4-4, 1-1 Summit) immediately answered with a Casey Kasperbauer three at the other end. By the time Myles finally missed a shot on Saturday, the Coyotes had built a 61-44 lead and there was less than 14 minutes left to play.

South Dakota did their second half damage at the free throw line, getting to the line 20 times while IUPUI was limited to two attempts. USD outrebounded the Jaguars 42-27 and hit 28-of-33 free throw attempts while IUPUI got to the foul line just seven times, all taken by Mitchell Patton, in the loss. A 24-13 disparity in fouls called resulted in the stark free throw attempt differential.

"Their zone (defense) did its job. We had super looks, but it made us a finesse team and we only shot seven free throws," Howard said. "It just got to be tough as we had three guys with four, three and three fouls (defensively). They hit 28 of 33 free throws and that was the difference in the game."

Rowson closed with 17 points and nine boards for USD and Trevor Gruis netted 14 of his 16 in the second half. Brandon Bos rounded out the hosts double-digit scorers with 14 off the bench while both Gruis and Tyler Flack grabbed eight caroms apiece.

Patton, the Jaguars' leading scorer, finished with nine points and six boards and junior Donovan Gibbs grabbed a team-high seven boards to go along with six points.

IUPUI shot less than 40 percent from the floor and 9-of-31 (.290) from three-point range. Hart was 5-of-14 from long range and Hubert was 2-of-7 while making his second consecutive start.

USD blew out to a 17-9 lead as Myles caught fire in the game's early going, but IUPUI used a 10-2 run to stay close. After yielding a Rowson three-point play in transition, senior Sean Esposito hit a key three to make it 27-25. The teams would trade baskets one more time before the Yotes used the decisive run before halftime to take control of the contest.

IUPUI dropped to 1-2 all-time against USD and remained winless inside the DakotaDome.

The Jaguars continued to play without junior guard Ian Chiles and sophomore swingman Marcellus Barksdale on Saturday. Chiles, a preseason Second Team All-Summit League selection, has yet to suit up this year due to an injury suffered in the team's lone exhibition game. Barksdale missed his third straight game to injury. The Jaguars also have yet to get a single minute from the freshman class of Cortell Busby, Elijah Ray and #Linwood Ross, Jr.#. Busby has been unable to play since the start of practice due to a foot injury while the latter two rookies are likely to redshirt.

"We need some health and good fortune," Howard said. "Usually you battle injuries for a game or two, not a month. This would affect anybody. We're excited about getting better and that's why I know this team can be good."

IUPUI will return to Indianapolis to face crosstown foe Butler on Wednesday (Dec. 5) night inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. Wednesday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2000 as the Jaguars come in at 0-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on MyNDY-23 as Anthony Calhoun (pxp) and Nick Gardner (analyst) call the action. Radio coverage on WNDE 1260 AM will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m. as Scott McCauley (pxp) calls the action for the Jaguars. His call can also be heard on WNDE.com and through the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones.
