KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City center Fred Chatmon had a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds as the host Kangaroos shot 53.4 percent and outrebounded the Jaguars 38-26 en route to a 79-65 win over the Jags on Thursday (Nov. 29) night at Swinney Rec Center. UMKC guard Nate Rogers added 13, hitting 6-of-10 shots in the win.
Junior #P.J. Hubert# continued his torrid play, scoring a team-high 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and junior
Donovan Gibbs contributed a career-high 14 points and eight boards. Hubert, coming off a career-high 22-point effort, took advantage of just his third start of his collegiate career by hitting 4-of-5 from three-point range and 6-of-10 shots altogether.
Still, it was Kansas City (3-3, 1-0 Summit) which took control of the game over the latter stage of the first half and never looked back.
IUPUI (3-5, 0-1 Summit) pulled ahead at 14-13 at the 13:11 mark of the first half after Hubert knocked in a four-point play and
Lyonell Gaines followed by splitting a pair of free throws.
From there, it was all Kansas City as the hosts reeled off 15 straight points, thanks to some sloppy IUPUI ball handling. Rogers scored back-to-back buckets, both off turnovers, during the run before Mason Wedel swished a 25-footer from the top of the key after
Jordan Shanklin had misfired at the other end.
Big man Brad Reid continued the Kansas City run with a three-point play and Chatmon capped it by grabbing one of his seven offensive boards and dropping in an easy putback.
Even after Gibbs halted the run with a 15-footer, Rogers answered with a triple to keep the momentum with the 'Roos. The turnovers and shooting misses continued to pile up before IUPUI finally responded with a mini 5-0 run to pull within 13 at 36-23 on a Gibbs free throw. However, UMKC closed the half with a 9-3 burst and took a 45-26 halftime advantage. The Jaguars were outrebounded 25-13 in the opening half and turned the ball over 14 times before the break. IUPUI came in averaging just more than 13 turnovers per game.
Despite an improved effort in the second half, the Jaguars were unable to make much of a dent in the Kangaroos' advantage. The Jaguars clawed within 14 at 64-50 with 7:36 to play when Hubert slashed through the defense for a three-point play, but Kirk Korver drilled a long three on the 'Roos next trip to serve as a final dagger. IUPUI got no closer than 14 at any point in the second half.
The 'Roos finished the game outscoring IUPUI 42-18 in the paint with the 6-foot-9 Chatmon going 9-of-12 from the floor and senior swingman Thomas Staton scoring 11 off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting. Chatmon also swatted four shots as IUPUI hit just 34.6 percent from the floor in the first half and 42.1 percent for the game.
Senior
John Hart was just 3-of-11 from the field and ended the night with 10 points, five boards and four assists. The team's leading scorer entering play, junior center Mitchell Patton, had 10 points and four rebounds in 27 minutes work.
The loss was IUPUI's third straight defeat to the 'Roos in Kansas City and the Jaguars slunk to 19-15 all-time against UMKC.
IUPUI will continue the two-game Summit League road trip on Saturday (Dec. 1) when the Jaguars head to Vermillion, S.D. to take on the University of South Dakota inside the DakotaDome. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. Eastern as Will Flemming (pxp) will call the action on WNDE.com and the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones. Pregame coverage will commence at approximately 7:45 p.m..
