ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Trey Burke had a game-high 22 points and nine assists and Glenn Robinson III had a career-high 21 points as No. 5/5 Michigan roared past IUPUI, 91-54 inside Crisler Center on Monday (Nov. 12) in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Senior
John Hart was IUPUI's lone double-digit scorer with 15 points.
With the loss, IUPUI (1-1) will take on Bowling Green (1-1) at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 13) in the second round of the prestigious preseason event.
"We definitely got better today," IUPUI Head Coach Todd Howard said. "It's about opportunities to get your team better. Now the goal is to get to 2-1 tomorrow and it's definitely a tough chore."
After building a 45-31 halftime lead, Michigan (2-0) methodically pulled away in the second half, continuing to use its superior size and deadeye shooting to bury the Jags. Michigan opened the second half with a 7-0 run to take a 52-31 lead, but IUPUI (1-1) responded with eight straight points, capped by back-to-back threes from
Greg Rice and
Donovan Gibbs.
However, IUPUI would get no closer as the Wolverines continued with a flurry of dunks and treys. By night's end, Michigan had hit 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) from three-point range and outrebounded the Jaguars 42-23 in the win.
Conversely, IUPUI shot just 34.9 percent from the floor in the loss. Junior Mitchell Patton had nine points, as did
Jordan Shanklin, who registered a new career-high on three threes. Gibbs finished with seven points and
Lyonell Gaines scored six off the bench.
Patton was the only Jag to hit at least half of his field goal attempts as Michigan's length bothered IUPUI shooters all night long.
Every time the nation's fifth-ranked team seemed primed to run away in the first half, IUPUI seemingly always had an answer up until the final horn. The Jaguars clawed within one at 26-25 with 8:26 left before halftime when Shanklin swished his third first half triple, but the host Wolverines responded with a decisive run to end the half.
Shanklin was pressed into early action after Rice picked up his second foul less than three minutes in and immediately answered the bell. The 6-foot Kentucky-native had hit just two career threes coming into play before hitting three first half attempts.
However, Michigan outscored IUPUI 19-6 over the final eight minutes of the first half, including a pair of Robinson III treys, to stretch out to a 45-31 lead at the break. Michigan shot 65.2 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including hitting 7-of-10 three-point attempts. Robinson III, the son of former Purdue great Glenn Robinson, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor before the break and finished 8-of-9 overall. The Indiana-native came in with a career-high of just 12 points, but eclipsed that number in the opening 15 minutes on Monday.
"We weren't shocked that they made those (threes)," Howard said of Michigan's sharp shooting. "We were surprised of the streak that they got on because a lot of those were challenged - a lot of those were tough shots.
"That's how they play and when they're hitting those, you'll see that all year."
Nik Stauskas added 11 off the bench and both Tim Hardaway, Jr. and Jordan Morgan tallied 10 apiece. Hardaway, Jr. finished with a game-high seven rebounds as Michigan had five guys grab at least five boards. No IUPUI player grabbed more than four as Shanklin and
Sean Esposito led the rebounding effort from the backcourt.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-13 all-time against nationally ranked opponents and 0-2 to Michigan. The Jaguars last took on the Wolverines in 2003, losing an 84-79 contest at Crisler.
Tomorrow's meeting with Bowling Green will be the first in school history. Pregame coverage will begin at 4:45 p.m. on WNDE.com and through the free iHeartRadio app, available on smartphones. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action from high above the Crisler Center court in the NIT's second round.
