ROCHESTER, Mich. - Despite 13 saves from junior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman, the IUPUI women's soccer team came up one score short as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 decision at Oakland on Friday (Oct. 26) night. Oakland clinched a spot in the four-team postseason tournament with the win after getting the game-winner from Alyssa Fulton in the game's 59th minute.
Oakland (8-5-3, 5-2 Summit) dominated the run of play, outshooting IUPUI (3-13-3, 1-4-2 Summit) 26-6 overall and 14-4 on frame. In addition, OU dominated in corner kick opportunities, 8-0.
Despite it all, IUPUI was still in position to win throughout, despite being blanked. OU's Meghan Reynolds hit an early post in the game's sixth minute and Guzman made five saves in the opening 20 minutes.
IUPUI's first offensive looks didn't come until late in the first half when both
Sierra Bryant and
Kelli Parks put attempts on target, only to see them stopped by OU goalie Shannon Coley.
Fulton finally netted the game-winner less than 15 minutes deep into the second half, thanks to an assist from Erin Ring. Ring shifted a cross into the middle of the IUPUI 18-yard box where Fulton headed a shot past a challenging Guzman for the game's only score and her first tally of the year.
IUPUI's best scoring chance of the second half was a
Brenna Parks' attempt in the 78th minute that went wide right of the net. Coley finished with four stops for the Golden Grizzlies and Kyla Kellerman led the OU attack with six shot attempts.
No IUPUI player had more than one shot attempt.
IUPUI will cap the 2012 season on Sunday when the Jaguars take on Fort Wayne at 1:00 p.m..
