INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women’s swimming and diving team competed in front of their home fans for the first time this season Friday evening and came away with victories over Summit League foe Eastern Illinois and Butler.

The Jags downed the Panthers, 64-31, and the Bulldogs, 73-22.

“I am very pleased with the way we came out and swam tonight. It was great to get the freshmen in and introduce them to what a college meet is like,” head coach Matt Bos said. “I think they did a great job and we can take a lot away from this meet moving forward. Now we have a quick turnaround getting on the bus tomorrow morning and heading up to Purdue against some really tough competition.”

Following an opening victory in the 200 medley relay, Natalie Trout got her season off to a great start posting the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 1,000 freestyle touching the wall in 10:54.39. Brittany Broyer wasn’t far behind with a time of 11:03.70 placing third.

The next four events resulted in four wins for the women’s team, with three of those four events resulting in 1-2 finished for IUPUI. Margaret Barber and Peyton Zehner went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle clocking in at 1:57.15 and 2:00.09, respectively, before Alexus Laird and Madison Taylor took the top two spots in the 50 free with marks of 24.40 and 25.16.

Mercedez Bray picked up her first collegiate victory in the 200 IM, besting teammate Jennifer Oleksiak by .51 seconds with a time of 2:13.42, before Elizabeth Bourgeois clocked in at 2:12.12 to win the 200 butterfly.

Laird followed up her victory in the 50 free with a win in the 200 back. Laird’s time of 2:05.53 marked the third-fastest time in school history, which also is Laird’s third-fastest time in her career.

The final victory of the night from the women’s team came from Bray, who registered the fourth-best time in program history in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.79.

The Jags are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they head to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted at Purdue University.
