ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshman Lyonell Gaines recorded a career-high 20 points and 11 boards for his first career double-double, but the Jaguars came up short in a 93-81 loss at Oakland on Saturday (Jan. 7) night. OU senior guard Reggie Hamilton scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the first half as the hosts built a 12-point halftime lead and never looked back.

The win snapped OU's six-game losing streak and kept IUPUI winless for the second straight game after Thursday's loss at IPFW. The Jaguars' two-game slide comes on the heels of a season-long six-game winning streak.

Oakland (9-10, 3-4 Summit) raced out to a 9-3 lead less than four minutes in and led throughout in the wire-to-wire victory. IUPUI clawed back within two at 21-19 on a Gaines putback, but missed opportunities to tie the score on two subsequent possessions. After the missed opportunities, Oakland peeled off a 7-0 run before Stephen Thomas stroked an open three. However, the lead escalated to 15 before a quick 9-2 burst cut the lead back to 45-37 with 55 seconds left before halftime.

A technical foul after Hamilton had drawn an IUPUI personal foul led to four straight made free throws and a 49-37 OU halftime lead.

Anytime IUPUI (8-10, 2-4 Summit) seemingly gained traction in the second half, the hosts had an immediate answer. Senior Christian Siakam gave IUPUI some much needed post presence with a drop step basket that made the score 62-53, but was immediately whistled for his fourth personal at the other end and sent to the bench. Hamilton then swished a 15-footer to push the OU lead back to double-digits.

IUPUI again looked to grab some momentum with three quick points, the first of which came when rookie Marcellus Barksdale drew the fourth foul on Hamilton with more than 10 minutes left to play. With the score 64-56, Laval Lucas-Perry swished a three from the corner to start a 9-2 run. The Jaguars got no closer than nine the rest the game.

The hot shooting Golden Grizzlies snapped their skid by hitting 54.2 percent from the floor and limiting the Jaguars to just 42.9 percent. Hamilton hit 10-of-14 tries and all nine of his free throw attempts and redshirt freshman Corey Petros went 9-of-14 to close with 20 points and six boards. Sophomore guard Ryan Bass tossed in 14 and Travis Bader added 13 off the bench.

Senior Alex Young finished with a team-high 22 points, but was just 6-of-21 from the floor and 1-of-6 from three. His 22 points moved his career total to 1,995 as he's attempting to become the third player in IUPUI history and 11th in Summit League history to hit for 2,000 career points. Thomas matched his career-high with 20 points by hitting 8-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three. Barksdale just missed reaching double-digits with eight points off the bench.

Gaines scored 14 of his 20 in the first half and collected eight of his 11 boards off the offensive glass. The Louisville, Ky.-native also dished out a season-high five assists in 38 minutes work.

Oakland won the glass, 40-33 with four players grabbing six or more boards led by Drew Valentine's eight. The bouncy junior had two key offensive boards in the final 10 minutes, leading to points on both occasions. Young grabbed five for the Jaguars and Thomas added four defensive boards.

The defeat was IUPUI's sixth straight in Rochester dating back to 2006.

IUPUI will return home for a  two-game Summit League homestand, beginning on Thursday night when the Jaguars host Southern Utah at 7:00 p.m. inside The Jungle.
