Jaguars come in having won six of seven

1/6/2012 3:01:00 PM

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI basketball team will head north to Oakland (8-10, 2-4 Summit) on Saturday (Jan. 7) seeking a road split, coming off a 72-67 loss at IPFW on Thursday night. The contest will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. inside the Athletics Center O'rena on the Oakland University campus.

Saturday's game can be heard in the Indianapolis-market on WNDE and worldwide on WNDE.com and via the iHeartRadio app available on smartphones.

IUPUI comes in having won six-of-seven after having its season-best six-game winning streak snapped at IPFW on Thursday. The Jaguars fell down by 10 points at the half and 12 early in the second stanza before making it a one-possession game late in regulation. However, the offense missed numerous chances to pull even late before eventually succumbing to the Mastodons in a five-point defeat. Senior Alex Young, who was recently named The Summit League December Athlete of the Month, pumped in a game-high 25 points and sophomore Ian Chiles contributed 13.

However, IUPUI hit just 39.7 percent from the floor and watched the 'Dons make better than 54 percent of their attempts in the win. IPFW swingman Frank Gaines led the way with 22 points and Mario Hines added 14 points and five boards off the bench.

IUPUI's six-game winning streak matched the program's longest since the tail end of the 2010 season when head coach Ron Hunter's squad won six straight which included a pair of Summit League Tournament games. During the streak, the Jaguars outshot foes from the floor, three and the foul line and outscored the opposition by more than 10 points per game at the charity stripe.

After starting the year 8-4, Oakland has lost six straight including four straight league games. Head coach Greg Kampe's squad is keyed by senior guard Reggie Hamilton (22.8 ppg, 4.4 apg, 2.7 spg) and fellow sharpshooter Travis Bader (13.2 ppg, 48 3's). The duo has combined to hit 90 threes through 18 games and both hit better than 33 percent beyond the arc. Do-it-all swingman Drew Valentine is averaging 12.2 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game while Michigan-transfer Laval Lucas-Perry comes in at 11 points per. The Golden Grizzlies are scoring nearly 77 points per game, but yielding nearly 80 a night. During an early season six-game winning streak, OU boasted wins at Houston and over Tennessee before opening The Summit League with home wins over South Dakota and UMKC.

Oakland has had the upperhand in the all-time series in Rochester, winning 10 of 12 meetings including five straight dating back to 2006.
