JAGUARS HEAD TO FORT WAYNE SEEKING SEVENTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

IUPUI owns Summit League-best six-game winning streak

1/4/2012 2:20:00 PM

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After an extended spell of sweet home success, the IUPUI basketball team will take to the road on Thursday night to take on IPFW (8-6, 2-3 Summit) in Summit League action inside Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m.. IUPUI (8-8, 2-2 Summit) is riding a league-best six-game winning streak, representing the longest winning streak since the end of the 2009-10 season.

Tuesday's game can be heard in the Indianapolis-market on WNDE and worldwide on WNDE.com and via the iHeartRadio app available on smartphones. In addition, the game can be seen live on the web with the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service as Scott McCauley (pxp) calls the action.

The Jaguars needed overtime to push the string to six on Tuesday, outlasting UMKC 83-74 in The Jungle. Senior Alex Young scored a team-high 18 points and a pair of freshmen - Marcellus Barksdale and Lyonell Gaines - came up with key contributions down the stretch and in overtime to key the victory. Gaines tied the game at 67 all with a layup off a Barksdale assist with under a minute to play, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, Young scored on IUPUI's first possession before Barksdale hit a tough 12-foot leaner to give the Jaguars the lead for good. Senior Stephen Thomas cashed in at the free throw line, hitting 8-of-10 in the game to finish with 16 points. Gaines closed with 15 points and five boards and Barksdale closed with nine points and a career-high five steals, falling one shy of Billy Pettiford's freshman record.

IUPUI matched its season-high with 31 points off turnovers after forcing 24 UMKC miscues while only turning it over 11 times at the other end. The Jaguars outscored UMKC by 24 points off turnovers and by 21 at the foul line to offset the 'Roos 62.5 percent three-point shooting.

Thomas Staton led UMKC with a career-high 15 points and Kirk Korver added 13, but was one of four 'Roos to foul out. The Jaguars, who came in ranked fifth nationally in free throw percentage, took full advantage of the foul shot disparity, making 29-of-39 (74.4 percent) tries. Young, Thomas and Ian Chiles all earned 10 attempts and combined to connect for 22 points.

The Jaguars come into play with an 0-5 mark away from home, having lost by better than 15 points per game, albeit against stiff competition. Two of the losses came against nationally ranked BIG EAST foes and two others came against teams picked to finish among the top two in their respective leagues. The slimmest margin in defeat was a five-point loss at UALR on Nov. 15 as part of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Classic. The recent six wins have all come at home as IUPUI has stayed in Indianapolis for 28 days leading up to Thursday's contest.

IUPUI's six-game winning streak matches the program's longest since the tail end of the 2010 season when head coach Ron Hunter's squad won six straight which included a pair of Summit League Tournament games. During the streak, the Jaguars are outshooting foes from the floor, three and the foul line and outscoring the opposition by more than 10 points per game at the charity stripe. In addition, IUPUI is outrebounding its past five opponents by 2.0 caroms per night and leading in turnover differential by +2.3 per game. Young has spearheaded the hot streak, averaging 23 points per game and hitting nearly 50 percent from the floor. Thomas (13.7 ppg) and Chiles (12.7 ppg) have been impressive as well with the latter having hit 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from behind the three-point arc.

Head coach Todd Howard's team comes in having won nine of the past 10 games with IPFW and the last five meetings in Fort Wayne. IUPUI is 22-10 all-time against IPFW and 10-2 in the program's Division I era. The Jaguars won the last meeting in Conseco Fieldhouse, 86-77 thanks to 23 points from Young and a career-high 18 from Sean Esposito (6-of-9 3's).

IPFW is led by junior scoring machine Frank Gaines (19.7 ppg) and veteran center Trey McCorkle (14.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg). Gaines ranks among The Summit League leaders in scoring, while also leading the Mastodons in steals (17), threes made (17) and minutes played (29.0 mpg). Inside, McCorkle is hitting 60.1 percent from the field and has grabbed a team-high 66 defensive boards. Saint Louis-transfer Justin Jordan, who became eligible at semester, is averaging 9.3 points per game in his four appearances off the bench.

As a team, IPFW has been strong on the glass, outrebounding opponents by nearly three boards per game.
