ROCHESTER, Mich. – Taking on the dominant program in Summit League swimming in Oakland University, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams held their own and watched one school record fall despite both teams dropping dual meets to the Golden Grizzlies Saturday afternoon at the OU Aquatics Center.
The women’s team fell by a score of 142-96, their first dual meet loss of the season, while the men’s team fell by a score of 119-86.
Only four members of the men’s and women’s team combined had swum at the OU Aquatics Center prior to Saturday’s meet, which will be the site of the 2012 Summit League Championships. Getting accustomed to the surroundings was the main goal of Saturday’s meet with the conference championships looming in less than three weeks.
“We come into every meet wanting to win, but today’s meet served two purposes – compete to win and get familiar with the pool since most of our team hasn’t competed here before,” said head coach
Matt Bos. “Considering most of our team has never swum here, I thought both teams did well and I’m excited about where we are with a few weeks to go before the conference meet.”
Jenny Oleksiak posted the highlight of the day for the Jaguars swimming to a new school record in the 200 breaststroke, besting Claire Helphinstine’s mark of 2:26.57 set on Feb. 19, 2005. Oleksiak won the event with a time of 2:25.84, nearly two seconds clear of her previous seasonal-best.
The women’s squad added three more victories and a pair of second place showings in addition to Oleksiak’s breaststroke victory.
Margaret Barber touched the wall first in both the 200 free (1:54.94) and 500 free (5:13.82), with her 200 freestyle mark setting a new personal best and the second-best mark in school history. Her 500 free time equaled the seventh-best time in program history.
The other win came from
Elizabeth Bourgeois in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.69. IUPUI’s second place showings came from
Alexus Laird in the 200 back at 2:10.22, the eighth-best time in school history, and Oleksiak in the 100 freestyle.
On the men’s side,
Mitchell Gauger and Alex Olsen went 1-2 in both the one- and three-meter dives, while the men’s 200 freestyle relay collected 11 points with a time of 1:31.90.
Luke Green swam to a second-place showing in the 100 free at 49.71, while
Adam Ferguson also placed second in the 200 breast timing in at 2:10.41, the fourth fastest-time in school history.
Tony Carroll continued his fine season with another podium finish in the 200 freestyle. Carroll’s time of 1:44.06 placed him third, but it was the second-best mark in program history.
