KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior Alex Young scored a game-high 26 points but IUPUI's Ian Chiles misfired on a 55-foot desperation heave as time expired as UMKC escaped with a 64-62 win over the Jaguars inside Swinney Recreation Center on Saturday (Jan. 21) night. Sophomore Trinity Hall led three Kangaroos in double-digits with 17 points and freshman Thomas Staton added 16 in the win.

Senior Stephen Thomas and Chiles both finished in double-figures for the Jaguars with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

IUPUI (8-14, 2-8 Summit) was down 56-47 with 6:05 to play after Nate Rogers swished an open three off a Reggie Chamberlain assist. However, head coach Todd Howard's team battled back with eight straight points from three different sources to setup the tight finish. Senior Christian Siakam started the run with a layup off a Lyonell Gaines give-and-go and then collected a steal at the other end. Young then stuck a 10-foot pull-up jumper before Chiles got in on the act.

Chiles swatted a Nate Rogers jumper and completed the stop by batting the ball off the UMKC guard. After a timeout, Chiles diced down the lane and dropped in a finger roll to cut the lead back to three. After an Estan Tyler turnover, the Louisville-native swished both ends of a one-and-one to pull the Jaguars' within one.

IUPUI could never get the lead though as UMKC (9-13, 3-7 Summit) hit 6-of-7 free throws in the final 2:22 to stave off the Jaguars. IUPUI trailed 60-58 and had possession with under two minutes to play, but Siakam threw the ball away when trying to hit Young for an open wing trey. Thomas hit the IUPUI big man on a cut to the basket, but rather than looking at the rim his kickout pass was wide of Young on the wing.

On UMKC's ensuing possession, Staton missed a left-handed runner but sophomore big man Kirk Korver grabbed the offensive rebound, kicked the ball back out and reset the offensive. After draining the shot clock, freshman Marcellus Barksdale fouled Tyler on a drive to the hole with 29.2 seconds left. The freshman hit both freebies and Thomas missed a potential game-tying three, only to see Gaines grab the board. After being fouled on the putback opportunity, Gaines hit the second of two free throws with 16.3 seconds left.

Staton all but buried IUPUI with two makes at the line with 14.9 seconds left to extend the lead to five, but the Jaguars made it interesting. Young missed an initial three, but Thomas hit on a second chance trey and the Jaguars immediately fouled Hall after he received the inbounds pass. The Kansas City-native missed the front end of the one-and-one, but the Jaguars were without a timeout and Chiles was only able to draw glass on his heave from beyond midcourt.

The loss was IUPUI's fifth straight and ninth straight on the road. It also meant a regular season series split between the two schools as IUPUI won in overtime in Indianapolis on Jan. 3 of this year.

IUPUI's defensive struggles continued as UMKC hit 53.7 from the floor and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from three in the win. IUPUI outrebounded the 'Roos 29-18 with Siakam grabbing a team-high seven caroms and Young plucking five including four off the offensive glass. Young was 10-of-24 overall and 1-of-6 from three as the Jaguars hit 46.2 percent from the field and 3-of-12 from three.

Chamberlain, UMKC's top scorer coming in at over 17 points per game, scored just 11 points on only seven shot attempts but delivered a game-high five assists. Rogers chipped in nine points in just 13 minutes work off the bench while IUPUI had a season-low two bench points.

UMKC led the majority of the first half until Greg Rice put the Jaguars in front 18-17 on driving layup at the 8:29 mark after he had forced a turnover on the 'Roos prior possession. The two teams traded baskets on their next trips before the hosts rattled off a quick 7-0 run to take a 28-20 lead. Staton capped the rally with an open three from the right wing.

IUPUI fired back with six straight points and outscored UMKC 8-3 burst to finish the half, with Young scoring six of the eight. Young scored nine first half points, despite hitting just 3-of-11 from the floor.

IUPUI will continue The Summit League road trek with a game in Macomb, Ill. against Western Illinois next Saturday (Jan. 28) night at 8:00 p.m. inside Western Hall. The contest can be heard in Indianapolis on 1260 WNDE, on WNDE.com or via the free iHeartRadio app avaliable on smartphones. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action from courtside.
