IUPUI SEEKING ROAD SPLIT AT UMKC ON SATURDAY

Jaguars dropped first game of two-game trip on Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Needing a win to gain a road split, the IUPUI basketball team will take on UMKC (8-13, 2-7 Summit) on Saturday (Jan. 21) night inside Swinney Recreation Center at 8:05 p.m. Eastern. IUPUI (8-13, 2-7 Summit) enters play looking to snap a five-game losing skid including Thursday's 88-78 loss at South Dakota.

Senior Alex Young recorded his 100th career double-digit scoring outing with a team-high 27 points and sophomore Ian Chiles tallied 18, but it wasn't enough. The Jaguars surged out to a 16-5 lead in the opening six minutes, but quickly gave it away as the Coyotes led by a point at the break. USD finally gained momentum late in the half and used a 9-0 run to build a late 11-point lead. IUPUI closed within five on a Young trey, but USD scored six in succession to put the game away.

USD senior guard Charlie Westbrook tied his career-high with 32 points and Louie Krogman tallied 21 points and nine assists. The Coyotes shot 55.7 percent from the floor and scored 26 points off 17 IUPUI turnovers in the win. The 26 points off turnovers tied for the most by an IUPUI opponent this season.

IUPUI's night was highlighted by a school record perfect 19-of-19 performance at the foul line, including Young's 9-of-9 effort. Senior forward Christian Siakam also continued his solid play in the middle with 15 points and seven rebounds as the Jaguars outrebouded USD 37-26.

Young continued his high scoring output, moving into seventh on The Summit League's career scoring list at night's end with 2,059 points.

Young is averaging team-high 20.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while also collecting a team-high 27 steals and 23 blocked shots. Behind him senior point guard Stephen Thomas is posting 11.1 points and 4.0 assists per game while Chiles is now netting 10.0 points per game. As a team, IUPUI ranks seventh in the country in free throw shooting (77.1 percent) while Thomas is 24th in the country in that category at 88.6 percent.

IUPUI leads the all-time series with UMKC 19-10 in the program's Division I era including the 83-74 overtime win in Indianapolis on Jan. 3. Young led four Jaguars in double-digits with 18 points and Stephen Thomas chipped in 16 in the victory. UMKC freshman Thomas Staton led five 'Roos in double-figures with 15 points, including hitting 3-of-3 from three. The Jaguars are 7-7 in the previous 14 meetings in Kansas City.

UMKC is led by sharpshooting guard Reggie Chamberlain (17.2 ppg, 60 3's) and sophomore forward Trinity Hall (10.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg). Head coach Matt Brown's squad is shooting better than 38 percent from three and has eight different players with at least 12 made treys this season. Staton is grabbing a team-high 5.1 boards per game to accompany his 7.9 scoring average and Kirk Korver is tallying 7.8 points per game. Freshman Estan Tyler is the team's top assist man at 3.0 per game. The 'Roos are 4-4 at home this year including Thursday's 72-50 win over Western Illinois. Chamberlain finished with 23 points including seven treys.
