VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior guard Charlie Westbrook tied his career-high with 32 points and Louie Krogman added 21 as a hot shooting South Dakota squad rolled past IUPUI, 88-78 inside the DakotaDome on Thursday (Jan. 19) night. The host Coyotes shot 55.7 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from behind the arc in the victory.

Senior Alex Young led three Jaguars in double-digits with 27 points and sophomore guard Ian Chiles chipped in 18 points and a career-high seven assists in the defeat. Senior big man Christian Siakam added 15 points and was one of three Jags to grab seven boards as IUPUI (8-13, 2-7 Summit) outrebounded the Coyotes 37-26.

However, the tale of the game ended up being turnovers. The usually sure handed Jaguars turned the ball over 17 times while forcing just 10 USD miscues. USD (7-11, 2-7) outscored the Jags 26-8 off turnovers.

The loss was IUPUI's fifth straight and dropped the Jaguars to 0-8 on the road this season.

IUPUI surged out to a 16-5 lead, fueled by back-to-back Young threes, but the Coyotes answered with a 15-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. From there, the lead switched sides six times before the hosts took a 35-34 halftime lead on a Westbrook blocked shot that resulted in a fast break jam.

The second half was nip-and-tuck with neither side able to create distance until USD finally reeled off a late 9-0 run to turn a 61-59 lead into an 11-point advantage. Allen Saint-Gelais started the run by banking home a runner and Trevor Gruis followed with an and-one opportunity, but missed the ensuing free throw after the under-8 media timeout. After IUPUI missed a pair of attempts at the other end, Gruis scored on a putback to push the lead out to 67-59, prompting IUPUI head coach Todd Howard to call timeout.

Chiles missed a trey out of the timeout and Westbrook answered with a made three in transition to give the Coyotes a double-digit lead. IUPUI finally stopped the run with a pair of Young free throws with 6:29 left, but USD consistently had an answer down the stretch.

The Jaguars closed within five at 72-67 on a Young three with 2:54 to play, but USD responded by tallying the game's next six points to seal the win.

Westbrook was an efficient 12-of-18 from the floor and 2-of-3 from three and added six assists, six boards and four steals. Krogman hit 4-of-9 from three while Gruis went 9-of-11 from the floor and tallied 18 points. Saint-Gelais also finished in double figures with 12 points off the bench.

Young went 7-of-17 overall and was a perfect 9-of-9 at the foul line. It was the 6-foot-6 lefty's 100th career double-digit scoring game and upped his career point total to 2,059, placing him 7th in Summit League history. The senior also played 37 minutes and surpassed Brandon Cole as the program's all-time leader in that category in the Division I era, having now played 3,725 in his four seasons. As a team, the Jaguars combined to hit a school record 19-of-19 at the charity stripe, eclipsing the previous mark of 95 percent (19-of-20) at Morehead State back on Dec. 28, 2002.

Chiles was 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the line while Siakam hit 6-of-10 shots and all three of his free throw attempts. Both Lyonell Gaines and Stephen Thomas finished with six points apiece, but teamed to make just 6-of-17 shot attempts.

IUPUI finished the night shooting 44.3 percent from the floor, despite the bulk of the team's attempts coming inside the arc.

IUPUI will cap the two-game Summit League road trip on Saturday (Jan. 21) night when the Jaguars take on UMKC inside Swinney Recreation Center at 8:05 p.m.. The Jaguars won the earlier meeting between the two schools, 83-74 in overtime in Indianapolis on Jan. 3.
