VERMILLION, S.D. - With The Summit League basketball schedule nearing the halfway point, IUPUI will hit the road for a two-game trek beginning at the University of South Dakota (6-11, 1-7 Summit) on Thursday (Jan. 19) night inside the DakotaDome at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action from courtside as the broadcast can be heard on WNDE 1260, WNDE.com or via the free iHeartRadio app on smartphones.
IUPUI (8-12, 2-6 Summit) enters play looking to snap a four-game losing skid.
The Jaguars dropped a hard fought 81-71 outcome to Summit League leader Oral Roberts inside The Jungle on Saturday night despite a game-high 27-point effort from senior
Alex Young. The Summit League Preseason Player of the Year put the Jags in front 63-60 with under eight minutes to play, but ORU (16-4, 8-0) responded with a 15-0 run by holding IUPUI scoreless for nearly the next six minutes. Junior sharpshooter Warren Niles led four Golden Eagles in double-digits with 23 points and the frontcourt duo of Michael Craion and Damen Bell-Holter teamed to contribute 36 points and 19 boards. The bigger Golden Eagles outrebounded IUPUI 42-27 in the win and outscored the Jaguars 26-8 at the free throw line. IUPUI committed a Division I low three turnovers and outscored the guests 15-3 off turnovers to help offset the free throw differential.
The loss was IUPUI's fourth straight to ORU after the Golden Eagles swept all three meetings a year ago.
Young continued his high scoring output, moving into eighth on The Summit League's career scoring list at night's end with 2,032 points. The 6-foot-6 lefty also turned in a season-high four steals on Saturday, but hoisted a career-high 27 shots to finish with 27 points. Sophomore
Ian Chiles was the only other Jaguar to finish in double-digits, tallying 10 points. Head coach
Todd Howard's team got increased bench output with eight points each from sophomores
Donovan Gibbs and Mitchell Patton. The duo combined to make 8-of-10 shots and grab seven boards in limited playing time.
Young is averaging team-high 20.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while also collecting a team-high 26 steals and 23 blocked shots. Behind him senior point guard
Stephen Thomas is posting 11.4 points and 4.0 assists per game. As a team, IUPUI ranks seventh in the country in free throw shooting (76.1 percent) while Thomas is 27th in the country in that category at 88.6 percent.
Thursday's game marks the first-ever meeting between IUPUI and South Dakota on the hardwood as the Coyotes are in year one of Summit League play. Thursday's game also marks the midpoint of league play as USD will return the game to Indianapolis on Senior Night on Feb. 15.
USD is led by senior guard Charlie Westbrook who comes in averaging 16.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. His backcourt mate, Louie Krogman, is netting 14.4 points and 3.4 assists per game while having hit a team-high 39 treys. Joining them in double-digits is 6-foot-10 Trevor Gruis who is tallying 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 52.2 percent from the field.
