IUPUI (8-10, 2-4) is coming off back-to-back road losses last week at IPFW and Oakland. On Saturday, the Jaguars dropped a 93-81 shootout to the Golden Grizzlies, despite three players finishing with 20 points or better. Freshman
Lyonell Gaines notched career-highs in points (20), rebounds (11) and assists (5) in his first-ever double-double, while senior
Alex Young netted a team-high 22 points. Classmate
Stephen Thomas tied his career-high with 20 points, including sticking 4-of-7 from three.
However, Reggie Hamilton led four Grizz in double-figures with 31 points and rookie forward Corey Petros added 20 points and six rebounds off the bench in the win. Oakland shot 54.2 percent from the floor and limited the Jags to just 42.9 percent shooting.
Young finished the game having upped his career scoring total to 1,995 and is on the cusp of becoming the third 2,000 point scorer in school history and 11th in Summit League history. Young leads the Jaguars in virtually every category including scoring (20.1 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg), blocked shots (20), free throws made (95) and threes made (33).The 6-foot-6 lefty is second on the squad with 19 steals and is hitting almost 83 percent at the free throw line. As a team, IUPUI is tied for fifth in the country in free throw percentage, making 77 percent overall. Thomas leads the way and is 20th in the nation at 89.7 percent.
IUPUI's current six-game home winning streak began on Dec. 10 against Western Kentucky and also included wins over Ball State and Valparaiso on the Indiana Pacers' home floor at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The Thunderbirds will be making their final trip to The Jungle as a Summit League foe. Head coach Roger Reid's team will be moving to the Big Sky Conference beginning next season. Reid's squad features a balanced attack, headlined by forward Jackson Stevenett's 13.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while bouncy senior Ramell Taylor comes in netting 12.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Senior big man Matt Massey is hitting for 10.8 points per game and connecting on 56.1 percent from the floor. As a team, Southern Utah hits 48.6 percent from the field and outrebounds opponents by 3.0 caroms per game. The T-Birds rarely shoot the three, having hit just 42 in 16 games, led by Damon Heuir's 21 makes.
IUPUI comes in at 18-10 all-time against Southern Utah and 8-5 in the 13 games played in Indianapolis. SUU won the most recent meeting, 80-68 inside the Jungle on Feb. 17, 2011. IUPUI led that game by 12 at the break, but was outscored 52-28 in the second half in the 12-point loss.
