VALPARAISO, Ind. - Valpo's Eric Nieto scored on a well placed ball in the 63rd minute as the host Crusaders knocked off IUPUI, 1-0 at Brown Field on Friday night. The IUPUI attack was rendered mostly punchless as the Jaguars were outshot for the seventh straight time to start the season.
It was the fourth time on the young season the Jaguars have been blanked.
IUPUI (1-5-1) came out on the offensive, getting an early corner kick opportunity after VU goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck stopped a
Matt Guy attempt less than seven minutes in. Later
Kyle Hyland earned a corner after having a strike knocked out of bounds by a VU defender.
Nieto broke the scoreless tie when he rolled a shot just under senior goalkeeper
Tyler Keever after receiving a pass from Kevin Miller.
Desperate for a goal, the Jaguars got quality attempts from both
Tyler Fritcha and
Ryan Robinson in the final five minutes. Fritcha had his attempt plucked by Zobeck while Robinson's header try was cleared off the back line by a Valpo (3-2-1) defender.
Fritcha led the Jaguars with two shots while Guy Shabtay attempted five for Valpo. Keever made five saves for IUPUI and lowered his GAA to 1.71 in defeat. Zobeck collected three saves in the shutout.
IUPUI's lengthy road stretch will continue on Thursday, Sept. 22 when the Jaguars head to Cincinnati to play at Xavier University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m..
