TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Freshman
Rebekah Jones put a sensational capper on her rookie campaign, taking third of 25 entries in the 5,000m run at the 2011 Pacesetter Invitational, hosted by Indiana State. Southern Indiana's Allison Laird rolled to the finish line in a time of 18:10.77 while DePaul's Stephanie Hughes edged Jones at the line for second place. Hughes crossed at 18:22.06 while Jones came in at 18:23.96.
"We had a couple of really strong performances today, really led by Beckie Jones," IUPUI Head Coach
Joni Sanders said. "She was outstanding, especially for a freshman. She looked strong and confident the whole race."
Senior
Brittney McDuffee closed her IUPUI career with a time of 18:40.11, taking fifth overall.
"Brittney just looked tired. She gave her normal 100 percent effort and we're very proud of all she's accomplished for IUPUI," Sanders said. "I hope to be able to go to the Hall of Fame banquet when she gets inducted down the road, because she's really laid the ground work for our program."
Freshman
Mariana Lopez-Owens won her heat of the 5K by more than 10 seconds, finishing in a time of 19:04.56. Sanders thinks her freshman could've gone even faster, had she been appropriately placed in the faster heat.
"Mariana ran very smooth and very consistent," Sanders said. "I don't know why she was in the slower heat, but she dominated that race."
Sophomore
Kaci Verkamp gave a solid effort in the faster heat, crossing at 18:57.57 to place seventh, one spot in front of Lopez-Owens. IUPUI's other entries included junior
Ana Paez placing 13th at 19:28.48 and sophomore
Rebecca Downs coming in 14th at 19:32.13. Junior
Allie McGraw capped the IUPUI runners at 20:20.28, taking 20th overall.
Saturday's meet marked the end of the spring season, with the Jaguars having competed in one indoor and four outdoor meets.
