WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - IUPUI junior
Ben Engle wrapped up a second-place finish among the 60-player field at this weekend's Boilermaker Invitational, held at the par-72 Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on the Purdue campus. The Floyd Central-product finished with a 1-under 215 (75-70-70) and finished two shots behind Purdue's Adam Schenk.
Collectively, IUPUI tied for fourth with a 54-hole 894 (310-289-295), finishing even with Northern Illinois. Purdue won the tournament at 877 and Idaho was second at 889. Bowling Green State leapfrogged the Jaguars in the final round and finished at 891.
"I thought the guys did a pretty good job," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "(Ben) Engle played really well. He had disappointment written on his face after the tournament, but when he looks back, I think he'll be pretty happy with a second-place finish. It's a tough golf course and he was second to a really good player."
Engle's classmate
Michael Davan finished tied for eighth at 221 (76-70-75) and
Michael Powell played well, even after being disqualified for a scorecard mixup in the first round. Powell carded back-to-back 74's to end the tournament.
"(Michael) Davan played really good golf," Andrews said. "So did (Michael) Powell. We could've had three guys in the top 10 had it not been for the scorecard mistake.
"It seemed like every time we teed it up, one of those three guys had a chance to win a college golf tournament."
Senior
Ben Moster closed his college career tying for 36th at 234 (82-75-77), equaling the effort of freshman
Jose Pablo Segurola.
Brandon Wenger turned in a 240 (83-81-76) playing as an individual.
"It was obviously Moster's last day," Andrews said. "I told him thanks for giving me your best. He works hard and that's why everyone accepts him. He really works at his game and has made himself a good player. From day one, he didn't lead with his mouth, but he led by example."
All that's left for the Jaguars this season is Powell's upcoming spot in NCAA Regional play. The Kokomo-native will compete on May 19-21 in one of six regionals, hoping to advance to the Men's Golf Championships.
"Anyone who knows (Michael) Powell knows that he's practicing and trying to think about how he's going to get out (of his region). That's his goal and he's capable of doing it."
