INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team will open its final two-game homestand of the 2010-11 season when it hosts Southern Utah inside The Jungle on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.. Pregame coverage on 88.3 FM will begin at approximately 6:55 with Scott McCauley (play-by-play) and former Jag Angelo Smith (analyst) calling the action. The game can also be viewed live via the internet as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription services on IUPUIJags.com.
IUPUI (16-11, 10-4 Summit) has won nine of the past 10 meetings with Southern Utah, including an 87-61 romp of the Thunderbirds on Jan. 22 of this year. The Jaguars trailed by three at the half, but outscored Southern Utah 47-18 after halftime in the win. Junior
Alex Young scored a game-high 27 and
Leroy Nobles added 22 in the victory. Junior
Christian Siakam patrolled the paint with 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting and
Stephen Thomas contributed 14 points and a team-high five assists.
IUPUI trailed by 10 midway through the first half, but rallied to get within 43-40 at the break before the second half explosion.
The Jaguars recently gained a split on their two-game trip through South Dakota State and North Dakota State, capped by Saturday's 76-72 win over the Bison. John Ashworth helped seal it with a steal and two made free throws in the closing seconds.
Young netted a game-high 24 points in the win and became the sixth player in school history to accumulate over 1,500 career points in the process. Nobles added 16 and Thomas added 11 off the bench.
Michael Tveidt led NDSU with 21 points on Saturday.
Young enters play as the top scorer in The Summit at 19.9 points per game and is the only player in the league ranked among the top 15 in scoring, rebounding and assists. Nobles is currently sixth in the league scoring race at 16.9 per game.
