IUPUI seeks Summit League split after Thursday's loss to South Dakota State

INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off their best offensive effort of the season, the IUPUI basketball team looks for its first Summit League win when the Jaguars host North Dakota State (6-1, 0-1 Summit) on Saturday (Dec. 3) night inside the Jungle at 7:00 p.m.. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action from courtside on WNDE 1260 with pregame coverage beginning at approximately 6:50. The contest can also be heard on WNDE.com and via the free iHeartRadio app available via smartphones. In addition, the game can be viewed as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service on Saturday.

IUPUI (2-6, 0-1 Summit) overcame an 18-point second half deficit on Thursday night to force overtime, but ultimately fell to South Dakota State, 97-93 in both teams Summit League opener. Senior Alex Young hit three straight threes at the end of regulation to give IUPUI a late 82-80 lead and later grabbed an offensive rebound of a  missed free throw and hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 4.0 seconds left.

In overtime, Young staked IUPUI to an early 89-88 lead, but SDSU (5-3, 1-0) made plays down the stretch to seal the win. After starting the game just 3-of-15 from the floor, Young heated up in the second half and finished with a team-high 28 points to lead six Jaguars in double-figures. Senior Christian Siakam registered his first double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 boards and classmate Stephen Thomas added 11 points and a career-high eight assists. Sophomore Ian Chiles tallied 14 and both Donovan Gibbs (12 points) and Greg Rice (11 points) reached double-digits off the bench. Gibbs' 12 points tied his career-high while he also delivered a career-best four assists.

Nate Wolters led SDSU with 32 points, eight boards and eight assists in 43 minutes while Griffan Callahan added 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. SDSU hit 14-of-32 (43.8 percent) from three, including making 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) first half attempts. IUPUI started cold, but hit 7-of-10 from three in the second half before making just 1-of-5 in the overtime period.

For the year, Young leads IUPUI in scoring (18.5 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg), blocked shots (7) and threes made (18). Thomas is second on the club in scoring at 9.4 points per game and is handing out 5.3 assists a night. The Indianapolis-native is also leading the Jaguars in minutes played at 35.3 per game and is second on the squad in steals (8). Of IUPUI's six losses, half have come by five points or fewer.

North Dakota State was handed its first loss of the season on Thursday night when the Bison dropped their Summit League opener at Western Illinois, 55-51. WIU led by as many as 12 in the second half and held on down the stretch to improve to 3-2 on the season. Freshman guard Lawrence Alexander led NDSU with 16 points and four assists and 6-foot-7 sophomore Taylor Braun chipped in 12 points and eight boards, but the Bison turned the ball over 20 times leading to 19 WIU points. On the year, Alexander leads the balanced Bison in scoring (12.9 ppg), assists (5.7 apg), steals (13) and minutes played (32.9 mpg), having started all seven games. Three other NDSU players average at least 12 points per game including 6-foot-8 sophomore Marshall Bjorklund (12.3 ppg), Braun (12.3 ppg) and sophomore sharpshooter Mike Felt (12 ppg). Bjorklund leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game and is shooting 68.6 percent from the floor.

Head coach Saul Phillips' team opened the year with six straight wins including victories over San Francisco, Green Bay and Fresno State. For the season, the Bison are outscoring their opponents by more than 12 points per outing.

IUPUI comes in at 6-2 all-time against NDSU and has won the past four meetings between the two squads. The Jaguars are 3-1 all-time against the Bison in Indianapolis.
