INDIANAPOLIS - After a grueling week in the classroom, the IUPUI basketball team will return to the floor on Friday (Dec. 16) night when the Jaguars host St. Joseph's College (4-3) at 7:00 p.m. inside the Jungle. In the Indianapolis-area, the game can be heard on WNDE 1260 as Scott McCauley (pxp) calls the action. His call can also be heard on WNDE.com and via the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones. In addition, the game can be viewed as part of the
IUPUI LIVE! subscription service on Saturday.
IUPUI (3-8) is coming off its best outcome of the season, having beaten Western Kentucky 84-76 inside the Jungle last Saturday (Dec. 10) night. Senior
Alex Young was the story of the night as the 6-foot-6 lefty scored an IUPUI Division I record 43 points, marking the most by an IUPUI player since the 1997-98 game. It was also the most by a Division I player this season and the most by a Summit Leaguer since 2008. Young hit 14-of-20 shots and a career-high 12-of-13 from the free throw line in the win.
Young and the Jaguars accelerated out to a nine-point halftime lead before WKU clawed within one at 40-39 with 13:16 to play. However, a 19-5 IUPUI run helped build an 18-point lead with less than five minutes to play before WKU hit some late threes to cut the final margin to eight. Senior
Stephen Thomas added 13 points, all in the second half, and dealt out a game-high six assists in the win. Sophomore center Mitchell Patton turned in a career-high nine boards to accompany his six points in 23 minutes work.
Freshman T.J. Price led WKU with 19 points off the bench and Kahlil McDonald added 15, including three threes.
With the 43-point outburst, Young upped his team-high scoring average to 20.0 points per game, while Thomas is second at 9.9 a night.
SJC (4-3) will be competing for the first time in eight days as the Pumas are coming off a 68-63 win at Olivet Nazarene on Dec. 8. St. Joseph's is led offensively by guard Dayvon Sloan (19.1 ppg, 47.2 3FG%) and Indianapolis-native Phillip Collins (16.1 ppg). Sloan, a 5-foot-9 guard from Louisville, has made 29 threes in the first seven games of the season while SJC is hitting 44 percent as a team from beyond the arc. Ryan Rebholz is also deft from deep, having made 13-of-29 (44.9 percent) tries, while Corey Clifton has made 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) thus far. The Pumas are being outrebounded by 8.6 caroms per game, but have offset that number by turning the ball over three times fewer than their opponents.
IUPUI comes in just 3-10 all-time against SJC, but are 1-0 at the Division I level. The Jaguars last played SJC in the regular season on Nov. 23, 2002, beating the Pumas 79-58 in the Jungle. Junior Odell Bradley led three Jags in double-digits with 20 points off the bench while both Antoine Lewis and Josh Mullins closed with 14 each. IUPUI led by just one-point at the break, but scored 55 second half points in the 21-point win.
Adult reserved tickets to Friday's game are just $10 with kids 12-and-under admitted for $7. Children 4-and-under are admitted for free, as are IUPUI students with a valid JagTag.
