WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Alex Young scored 16 points, all in the first half, and sophomore Mitchell Patton scored a season-high 11 points but host Georgetown used a monster second half to roll to an 81-58 win over the Jaguars inside the Verizon Center on Monday (Nov. 28) night. Georgetown (5-1) outscored IUPUI 49-27 in the second half to turn a one-point halftime lead into the blowout victory.

Hollis Thompson led three Hoyas in double-digits with 21 points and 10 boards and Henry Sims tallied 14 on 6-of-10 shooting. Markel Starks pumped in 13 as Georgetown shot 49.3 percent from the floor overall and 57 percent in the second half. Conversely, IUPUI hit just 35 percent for the game and 30.3 percent in the second half.

"I thought we chopped the game up, whether it was via subbing or changing defenses," IUPUI head coach Todd Howard said. "And, we got on a little roll and made some shots. That can definitely make up for a variety of ills.

"Knowing the team that they are and the high that they're on, they're playing as well as anyone right now. (Georgetown) played well. When you play these kinds of games, you hope that they're off a little bit."

After a brilliant first half, the first four minutes of the second half were anything but for the Jaguars as Georgetown opened up with a 10-0 run. Nate Lubick energized the run with a two-handed dunk in transition after the two teams traded steals near midcourt. Freshman Lyonell Gaines temporarily stopped the bleeding with a putback to make it 42-33 with 15:38 remaining.

"I thought early in the second half, that little run unraveled us a little bit," Howard said. "You can't unravel three or four possessions and that was our downfall."

The Jaguars clawed back within seven at 51-44 when freshman Marcellus Barksdale swished a couple free throws after rebounding a Patton miss with 12:28 to play. Yet, Georgetown rattled off seven quick points and never let the guests within 12 the rest the night.

Even after the stellar first half, IUPUI (2-5) found itself down a point at 32-31 at the break. The Jaguars led nearly the entire first 14 minutes of the game, albeit by no more than a single possession at any point.

Young got the Jaguars off to a hot start, scoring IUPUI's first 10 points less than four minutes in. IUPUI took an early 7-3 lead and Young later made it 10-8 at the 16:32 mark with his second early three. The game stayed at track meet pace early with both team's offenses hitting on all cylinders.

"We haven't been getting off to great starts, so tonight in this environment, I thought we answered the bell," Howard said.

The game stalled later in the first half as shots stopped falling at both ends. After scoring five straight points and keeping IUPUI scoreless on three straight trips, the Hoyas took a 32-29 lead with 48 seconds left in the half. Patton capped the first half scoring on a putback with 18 seconds left and then blocked a shot at the final horn to keep it a one-point game at the break.

Patton finished 5-of-10 from the floor and matched his career-high with four rebounds. He became the tenth different Jag to score double-figures in a game this season and IUPUI got a double-digit effort off the bench for the seventh straight game to start the year. Gaines tallied eight points and six boards (five offensive) and Stephen Thomas added five points, seven boards and four assists in 36 minutes work.

Young seemed primed for a monster night, but was held scoreless over the final 22 minutes and went just 1-of-12 from the floor after opening the game 3-for-3. The 6-foot-6 lefty grabbed a team-high eight boards and blocked a pair of shots.

"He was forcing it a little bit and I think he missed a couple that were good looks," Howard said. "I do think he played his butt off in the first half and really attacked off the glass.

"It was just a matter that we couldn't get out in transition because we couldn't get a stop."

The taller Hoyas controlled the game on the inside, outscoring IUPUI 46-22 in the paint and outrebounding the Jaguars 43-36. The 6-foot-8 Lubick grabbed 14 rebounds and delivered five assists to accompany eight points.

The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-2 all-time against the Hoyas and 1-10 all-time against foes from the BIG EAST. The Jaguars are now 0-4 in road games in the early going this season.

IUPUI will return home to open Summit League play, beginning with a Thursday night tipoff with South Dakota State inside The Jungle. Tip time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage on WNDE 1260 beginning at approximately 6:50. Scott McCauley (pxp) will call the action from courtside and the game will also be broadcast via the web as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service.
