On the floor, IUPUI (1-1) is seeking redemption after a 75-70 loss at UALR on Tuesday night. Summit League Preseason Player of the Year
Alex Young pumped in a team-high 19 points and sophomores
Greg Rice and
Donovan Gibbs tallied 11 each. Gibbs also tied his career-high with a team best seven boards and senior
Stephen Thomas contributed 10 points off the bench in his season debut.
IUPUI fell behind by as many as 16 points in the first half and still trailed by 11 at the break. The Jaguars never orchestrated a substantial run in the second half as the final margin was as close as IUPUI came over the final 24 minutes of the contest. The Jaguars only led for a brief 2-minute first half stretch before the host Trojans used a quick 14-3 burst to take the lead for good.
Sophomore guard Chuck Guy paced UALR (2-1) with 21 points and Courtney Jackson added 12.
IUPUI shot 49.1 percent from the floor, but was outrebounded 38-31 and yielded 12 second chance points in the defeat. Through two games, IUPUI has had seven different players score in double-digits in at least one of the two games while Young is the lone Jag to have reached double-figures in both contests.
Young is averaging a team-high 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and has hit 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) from three. Senior forward
Christian Siakam is netting 15 points per game and shooting 81.3 percent from the floor.
IUPUI is 1-2 all-time against Milwaukee although the two teams haven't met since 1990. IUPUI won the first meeting between the two schools 72-66 in Indianapolis on Dec. 22, 1986, before dropping the return game in Milwaukee, 90-75 on Dec. 21, 1987. The most recent meeting was a 106-88 loss in Milwaukee on Feb. 7, 1990. That IUPUI team finished the year 23-14 and participated in the NAIA National Tournament.
After two games this season, Milwaukee is led by junior guard Ja'Rob McCallum who comes in averaging 14 points and 2.5 steals per game. The Marion, Ind.-native has also hit a team-high five threes in the season's first two games. 6-foot-7 junior James Haarsma comes in averaging 12 points and 14.5 rebounds per game and senior guard Ryan Allen is netting 13 points and four boards a night. The Panthers' first two wins of the year have come over Southwest Minnesota State and at Northern Illinois.
