INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams totaled 24 individual victories and swept all four relays Friday evening against Butler and Centre College at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The men's team finished with a 184.0 - 112.0 win over Centre College, while the women's team picked up a 93.0 - 39.0 win over Butler and a 95.0 - 37.0 win over Centre College.

“We keep talking about the attitude you have and the enthusiasm you bring and that’s what’s been carrying us so far,” said head coach Matt Bos. “Everybody is sore and tired and we are proving with a good positive outlook you can come out even when you are sore and tired and perform well. I was really proud of the way they came out and the energy they had once again.”

Three athletes made their way onto IUPUI’s all-time Top 10 chart in four events, with the reigning Summit League Men’s Swimmer of the Week, Tony Carroll, stealing the show posting a school record in the 200 freestyle.

Carroll timed in at 1:44.41 in the race besting the previous school record time of 1:44.60 set by John Winter back in 2002. Carroll picked up his second win of the day in the 200 backstroke touching the wall in 2:01.08.

Alexus Laird continued to swim fast etching her name further up the IUPUI charts in the 100 and 200 backstroke en route to a pair of wins in both events. Laird began with a winning time of 59.35 in the 100 backstroke, good enough for the second-best time in school history, before posting the seventh-best time in program history in the 200 backstroke at 2:10.53

The last individual to crack the school record books was Alexander Nunnelly in the 1000 freestyle, posting a winning time of 10:05.80 moving his name into the No. 10 spot on the IUPUI charts. However, that was just the first of Nunnelly’s triumphs on the day as he captured two more wins in the 100 freestyle and the 200 IM with times of 49.44 and 2:04.17, respectively.

On the women’s side, Jenny Oleksiak and Lindsey Hurst were two-time winners with Oleksiak sweeping the breaststroke events and Hurst winning the sprint freestyle events.

The other dual winner came from the men’s team, where Adam Ferguson took top honors in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

Other event winners were Lizzie Bourgeois (200 freestyle, 1:59.06), Amanda Janda (200 butterfly, 2:18.51), Andrew Saunders (100 backstroke, 55.51), John Van Dyke (200 butterfly, 1:59.48), CJ Howard (50 freestyle, 22.69), Luke Green (500 freestyle, 4:58.71), and Josh Davis (100 butterfly, 55.03).

Most impressive from those times was Green’s 500 free time, which was nearly eight seconds faster than his time registered at last season’s Summit League Championships.

In diving, Kirsten Sidebottom captured both the 1- and 3-meter dives, while Mitchell Gauger and Alex Olsen went 1-2 in both diving events.

Of the four relays in which IUPUI won, the women’s 200 medley relay was the most impressive in terms of time nearly missing out on a school record clocking in at 1:50.78, missing the school record by .48 seconds.

Both teams have a week off competition before returning to the pool Nov. 11-12 for the 2011 House of Champions Meet hosted at the IU Natatorium.

“All in all we are in a good spot right now. We are going to keep working hard and training hard, especially since the month of November is a big month for us in terms of focusing on training. So we are going to keep going at it and if they can stay positive the way they are, I think that can carry us a long way,” Bos said.
