CARMEL, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team came out flat and never truly hit its stride as the Jaguars dropped a 4-1 Summit League decision to in-state for IPFW at Murray Stadium on the Carmel High School campus on Friday (Oct. 28) night. IPFW got a pair of goals from both Arianne Mason and Tara O'Toole in the win.
Senior
Alicia Brock, playing at her former high school, netted IUPUI's lone score of the night.
"I think our kids realized that we don't have a chance of advancing on and our effort level wasn't as high as it has been the last couple games," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "A lot of our offensive attack in the first half was pretty nonexistent because we just couldn't connect passes to get down the field.
"The energy didn't feel like a positive vibe that we were going to get this thing done."
IPFW (6-9-1, 3-4-1 Summit) completely dominated from the outset, outshooting the 11-3 in the first half and 23-7 overall. However, the Mastodons didn't get on the scoreboard until the 34th minute when Mason scored from the near post after Tylar Allison played a low driven corner kick into the Jaguars' six-yard box.
IUPUI (3-11-4, 2-5-1) was able to get even in the 57th minute on Brock's fifth goal of the year.
"We switched formations at halftime into a 3-4-3 and the way they lined up, it really allowed us to have our left mid pretty wide open," Johnson said. "That attack started out of playing a ball out to Ashley Doreski out wide.
"Megan overlapped around her and created a great opportunity for us."
Doreski sent a left-footed cross into the middle of the penalty box to classmate
Sarah Wong. Wong initially stumbled and opted to tap the ball back to Brock, rather than attempting to turn and fire a shot. The Carmel-native put a composed strike on the ball, driving it easily past IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden.
The rest of the night belonged to the 'Dons though.
O'Toole tallied the game-winner in the 63rd minute, capping some precision passing. Lisa Underwood sent a slicing pass to Brittany Climmons, who rolled a through ball between the Jaguars' defensive backs. O'Toole rolled her shot beyond IUPUI goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman and inside the far post for her third goal of the year.
IPFW landed the dagger in the 77th minute on Mason's second goal of the season and O'Toole played add-on with under a minute to play.
Guzman made six saves and benefited from an
Alex Baer team save in the 58th minute that kept the score tied momentarily. In addition on Friday, senior
Margaret Allgeier became the program's all-time leader in appearances with 78, surpassing former teammate
Katrina McCrory in the process. Allgeier had previously taken the all-time lead in starts earlier this season.
Brock's fifth goal pulled her even with
Megan Hock and
Taylor Heidorn for the team lead in that category and Guzman took over the team lead in minutes played in goal.
IUPUI was eliminated from postseason contention earlier in the day by virtue of Oakland's 3-0 win at Western Illinois. The Jaguars will cap the 2011 regular season on Sunday afternoon when they host OU at 1:00 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium. The nine member senior class will be recognized on the field following the game.
