LEXINGTON, Ky. - Head Coach
Steve Franklin's Jaguars will open the 2010 campaign this weekend when the Jaguars travel to Lexington, Ky. to take part in the University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament (UKIT). IUPUI will take on a pair of familiar foes, beginning with Friday's match against UNC-Asheville at 5:00 p.m.. The weekend will conclude with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff against Kentucky on Sunday.
IUPUI dropped a wild 4-3 decision to Asheville to open the 2007 season in Lexington in this same event. The Jags trailed 4-1 with under 20 minutes left, but rallied with late scores from Vangel Nacovski and Eric Weigman to make things interesting.
Sunday's meeting will be the fifth-time ever in IUPUI's Division I era. The Wildcats have won the previous four matchups, including a 2-1 victory over the Jags last season.
The Jaguars went 1-1 during the 2010 preseason, including knocking off No. 21 Northern Kentucky on the road, 2-1. Senior
Derek Craig opened the scoring with a penalty kick and
Perez Agaba added insurance with a second half tally, set up by senior midfielder
Nate Ohmer. A late defensive lapse saw the Norse make it 2-1 in the 87th minute, but IUPUI emerged victorious.
Last weekend, IUPUI trekked to the University of Detroit and dropped a 2-0 decision.
IUPUI's last win at the UKIT came in August 2006 when the Jaguars defeated Florida Atlantic, 1-0 on an overtime goal by Jared Byczko in the 92nd minute. Drew Deffner recorded the shutout in net that day.
