CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team yielded a goal less than three minutes in and saw host Eastern Illinois add some late insurance as the Panthers knocked off the Jags 2-0 in both teams' season opener.
EIU (1-0) took an early lead, putting a goal past IUPUI rookie goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman just 140 seconds into her collegiate career. Ashley Eck rolled a cross from right-to-left along the endline that Ashley Streid deflected into the net for the game's initial goal. Streid missed two other golden opportunities in the first half, firing a shot just over the crossbar in the 23rd minute and misfiring from distance in the 40th minute.
EIU's Kaitlin Sullivan made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute as she scored on a header after a team save on the Panthers' first shot attempt.
Offensively, IUPUI's (0-1) best chances came late in the contest, including a free kick from
Ashley Doreski that forced EIU goalkeeper Jessica Taldone to make a diving stop on.
EIU outshot the Jaguars 12-8 overall and earned two more corner kicks than the guests. Doreski and fellow rookie
Sarah Wong led IUPUI with two shots each. Streid paced all players with four shot attempts, putting two on frame.
Guzman made one save in her collegiate debut while EIU starter Kaylin Lorbert earned the win with just over 70 minutes of scoreless soccer.
IUPUI will now return home to host Ball State on Friday, Aug. 27 at Kuntz Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag and adult tickets are just $5.
