INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball program will pay homage to its three seniors -
Jon Avery,
Robert Glenn and
Billy Pettiford - prior to Saturday's home finale with Southern Utah in The Jungle. That contest is slated to tipoff at 7:00 p.m. EST with Scott McCauley (play-by-play) and Jared Lux (analyst) beginning coverage at 6:50. Free audio and subscription video will be available via IUPUIJags.com.
Of this year's senior crop, Glenn is making a case for Summit League Player of the Year honors while both Avery and Pettiford have embraced and excelled in their roles on this year's squad. Glenn comes in leading The Summit in scoring at 19.5 points per game and is shooting 63 percent from the floor in league games.
Avery is a leading candidate for The Summit League Sixth Man of the Year Award, averaging 8.2 points and over four rebounds per game off the bench. He's led the league in field goal shooting the past two seasons and is currently atop the rankings as the 2009-10 schedule hits the home stretch. Meanwhile Pettiford ranks among the top defensive big men in the league, ranking among the top 15 in blocked shots and second in steals. He's already among elite company in the IUPUI record books as he became just the third player in school history to collect 500 rebounds and 200 career assists earlier this year.
IUPUI (19-9, 12-3 Summit) is looking for its fourth 20-win season at the Division I level and the fifth of Head Coach
Ron Hunter's career. The Jaguars rolled up a season-high 103 points in a 103-65 thrashing of UMKC on Thursday night, led by Glenn's 29 and sophomore
Alex Young's 26. Junior
Leroy Nobles chipped in 18 and Avery added 14 off the bench.
The Jags shot nearly 68 percent from the floor in the win, marking the fifth time this year IUPUI has shot better than 60 percent from the floor this year. IUPUI entered the week ranked fourth in the country in field goal shooting.
Southern Utah (6-20, 2-13) is led by senior swingman Davis Baker, who comes in scoring 16.2 points a night. He also grabs a team-high 5.0 rebounds a game and is shooting 86 percent from the free throw line. Collectively, SUU ranks among the national leaders in free throw shooting at 73.7 percent as a team.
IUPUI leads the all-time series 18-9 and won the previous meeting 75-60 on Jan. 21, 2010 in Cedar City.
Members of the IUPUI Athletics Department will be collecting canned goods at the door as part of the second annual Summit League food fight. As part of the competition, Summit League schools compete to see who can collect the most canned goods surrounding a home event.
