SHREVEPORT, La. -- The IUPUI women's basketball team put three players into double figures, but a combination of turnovers and missed free throws hurt the Jaguars down the stretch, as Centenary pulled away late for a 67-57 win Monday night at the Gold Dome. The loss to the Ladies was the first in 14 meetings for IUPUI.
IUPUI (2-23, 1-13 Summit) led by as much as seven after a 20-7 run to open the second half, but could not hold off Centenary (2-24, 1-14 Summit) in the final 10 minutes of the contest. After a
Clara Mitchell layup put the Jaguars ahead, 48-43, the Ladies outscored IUPUI, 24-9, the rest of the way.
Kerah Nelson had 20 points to lead the Jaguars, while
Ebony Davis had 12 and
Briannica Tye 11.
Trailing 32-26 at halftime, the Jaguars mounted a furious rally to put themselves in position to win. Nelson had four early points and
Mariah Fleming capped IUPUI's first run with a three in the corner to knot the game at 37 with just under 14 minutes remaining.
Davis scored the Jags' next three points, splitting a pair of free throws and putting in a layup to make it a 42-39 contest; two breakaway layups by Tye gave IUPUI their largest lead of the night, but it would not last.
With 6:55 left, Ashley Jackson converted in the paint while being fouled; though she would miss the free throw, the momentum clearly shifted, as Centenary capitalized on back-to-back IUPUI turnovers to go up, 49-48, on a Vashni Sharp-Moore layup.
Two Nelson free throws put the Jaguars back on top, but Sharp-Moore drilled a three, giving Centenary a lad they would not relinquish.
Split free throws on two separate trips to the line prevented the Jaguars from cutting into a six-point deficit, as Centenary iced the contest late by going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
On the night, the Jaguars went just 18-for-28 from the line, while committing 31 turnovers on the night.
With four games remaining in the regular season, the Jaguars trail Southern Utah by 3 games for the final spot in The Summit League Tournament; any combination of Thunderbird wins and Jaguar losses totaling two will keep IUPUI out of the conference tournament.
The IUPUI women's basketball team will celebrate the career of
Farren Stackhouse on Saturday, Feb. 20, when they hold Senior Day ceremonies prior to their game against Southern Utah. Tip-off from The Jungle is slated for 4:30 p.m. EST.
