SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Alex Young led three Jaguars in double-digits, including scoring his 1,000th career point, but No. 12 Gonzaga cruised to an 86-56 win over IUPUI in the opening game of the regional round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at McCarthy Athletic Center on Sunday.

Steven Gray led five Gonzaga (2-0) double-digit scorers with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the victory. Gonzaga shot a blistering 60.3 percent from the floor and limited IUPUI (0-1) to just 34.6 percent at the other end.

"That's a really good basketball team," IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said of Gonzaga. "They can beat you in a lot of different ways. I think we were kind of shell shocked at first and really didn't feel any comfort until the second half. That's what they do and you can't really replicate that in practice. They take you out of your stuff and don't let you play your game."

IUPUI misfired on its first 12 field goal attempts of the game until John Ashworth hit a 16-footer from the right elbow at the 10:36 mark of the first half, stopping a 14-0 Gonzaga run that had made the score 16-2. Young was also whistled for two early offensive fouls, limiting his effectiveness to start the game. The lead grew as high as 21 in the first half before the hosts took a 37-18 lead at the break.

IUPUI showed a little moxie by scoring the first five points of the second half on Young's slicing layup and a long three from the top of the key by Leroy Nobles. Gonzaga quickly thwarted any momentum the Jags had built by burying a long three from the right wing directly in front of his own bench.

IUPUI got no closer than 14 the rest of the night and trailed by as many as 32 in the closing seconds.

Kelly Olynyk hit 6-of-7 shots and score 13 off the bench for Gonzaga and both Robert Sacre and Sam Dower scored 11 each.

Nobles closed with 14 points on just 3-of-13 shooting off the bench for IUPUI and Ashworth ended with 10 points and two assists. Only three other Jags scratched as Stephen Thomas and Mitchell Patton scored six each in their IUPUI debuts and sophomore Greg Rice had four points in 14 minutes.

"Mitch (Patton) is going to be a good one for us," Hunter said. "He showed us some things today. He's not going to face bigs like that in The Summit League. He played some really good minutes in the second half."

IUPUI was outrebounded 37-27 and turned the ball over 17 times, leading to Gonzaga's 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The loss dropped the Jaguars' to 0-8 all-time against ranked opponents since joining the Division I ranks in 1998.

"We've got to go back to work now and get things going right," Hunter said. "It doesn't get any easier from here. We've got a tough schedule that going to get us ready for our league, but we've got a lot of work to do from now to then."

IUPUI will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 16 when it hosts IU-Northwest in the 2010 home opener in the Jungle. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage on 88.3 The Walk beginning at approximately 6:50. Scott McCauley (play-by-play) and Angelo Smith (analyst) will describe the action from courtside and free schedule posters will be distributed to fans in attendance while supplies last.
