MEN'S SWIMMING TEAM OPENS 2010-11 SEASON AGAINST SLU, VALPO AND EVANSVILLE

FISHERS, Ind. - The IUPUI men's swimming team opened its 2010-11 season against teams from Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon in Fishers, Ind.. The Jaguars claimed a 120-79 win over Valparaiso while dropping the outcomes with SLU and Evansville.

Senior Michael Steurer led the Jaguars by winning both the 200 freestyle and backstroke races on Sunday. Steurer won the 200 free event in a time of 1:48.22, touching just over a second ahead of his nearest competitor from SLU. He later won the back in a time of 1:57.67, edging the field by just under half a second.

Senior Tyler McGowan earned second-place finishes on Sunday, competing in the 200 IM, 200 fly and 500 freestyle events. He swam a time of 2:02.72 in the IM before posting a 1:59.93 butterfly time later in the day. He wrapped up his afternoon with a 4:52.63 in the 500 free.

The day started well for the Jaguars as the 400 medley relay team of Hunter Chiasson, Kyle Whitaker, Neal Ross and Sam Welch took third with a time of 3:44.00. Later, Luke Green earned a podium finish by placing third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.81.

Jaguars also placed 2-3 in the 200 breaststroke event as Andrew Heideman and Whitaker came in at 2:17.73 and 2:18.54, respectively.

IUPUI will return to the pool on Oct. 8 when the Jaguars host Asbury College inside the on-campus IU Natatorium at 6:00 p.m..
