INDIANAPOLIS – After two weeks away from the pool, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were back in action on Thursday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium and the women’s team came away with a 132-70 victory over Eastern Illinois, while the men’s team fell to the Panthers, 127-78.

Erin Bieger clocked two victories and a second-place showing to lead the women’s squad. Bieger finished second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:49.00, giving her the second-fastest time in program history. Bieger finished less than three seconds away from the school mark set in 2006 by Sara Smith.

Bieger’s two victories came in the 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, where she recorded marks of 5:16.05 and 2:24.20, respectively. The first-place time of 5:16.05 in the 500 freestyle also moved Bieger into second place all-time in program history.

While Bieger registered a pair of Top 2 school marks, Sara Decker also managed to crack the Top 10 chart in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:20.38, placing her 10th in school history.

The trio of Katelyn Cato, Lizzie Bourgeois, and Decker led the Jaguars to a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 freestyle with Cato pacing the group with a time of 2:00.14. Later in the meet, Cato notched her second victory of the meet in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:12.97.

In the sprints, Lindsey Hurst swept the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle with first-place times 25.47 and 56.48, respectively, while Bourgeois closed out the first-place showings with the top time of 2:16.50 in the 200 butterfly.

On the men’s side, Neal Ross bested the field in both the 1,000 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Ross won the 1,000 freestyle by 14-plus seconds after clocking in at 10:22.14, before touching the finish line in 5:02.15 in the 500 freestyle to win that event by four seconds.

Michael Steurer led a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke and posted the 10th-fastest time in school history at 1:56.57. Hunter Chiasson followed Steurer besting the two-minute mark with a time of 1:59.93, before Steurer finished second in the 200 individual medley, just one second behind EIU’s Michal Lacine.

Finally, Tyler McGowan registered the final victory for the Jaguars in individual events with a triumph in the 200 butterfly. McGowan’s mark of 1:57.56 moved him on to the program’s Top 15 chart for the sixth time.

IUPUI continues its three-day, three-meet stretch on Friday, Oct. 22, when it travels to Centre College for a dual meet, before rounding out the week at the Indiana Intercollegiates on Saturday, Oct. 23, in West Lafayette, Ind.
