INDIANAPOLIS - IPFW's Zach Plackemeier drilled a 17-foot wing jumper with 0.3 seconds to play to send the visiting Mastodons to a 62-60 overtime win over IUPUI inside Conseco Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped IUPUI's six-game winning streak and dropped the Jags back to second in The Summit League standings.
After sophomore
Alex Young tied the game with a driving layup with 6.9 seconds left, Plackemeier dribbled the ball into the frontcourt and worked behind an Antwone Snead screen before rattling home the contested game-winner from the right side.
The shot seemed a fitting end to a day in which IUPUI (16-8, 9-2 Summit) seemingly never found an offensive rhythm.
"I'm really disappointed in how we came out today. I don't know the reason, but we just didn't have it today," IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter said. "It's disappointing because we lost all that momentum we built on Thursday (against Oakland). We've got a long week of practice ahead of us and we've got a lot of things to work on."
IUPUI fell into an early 12-0 hole and didn't get on the scoreboard until Young scored in transition after a
Jon Avery steal and assist at the 14:09 mark. Even after breaking the ice, the Jaguars struggled to gain traction. IPFW (11-10, 6-5 Summit) stretched out to a three touchdown advantage at 28-7 with 5:18 left in the first half until the hosts finally showed signs of life.
Avery and
John Ashworth combined to score every point during a 15-0 run that helped the Jags get within 29-22 at halftime. IPFW refused to relinquish its lead until IUPUI used an 11-0 burst to turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point lead with 6:08 to play.
During that span, IPFW went without a bucket for over six minutes until John Peckinpaugh hit a baseline jumper to make it 48-46 with 5:26 left in regulation. IPFW regained the lead with 2:59 left when Snead completed a three-point play on the inside, but IUPUI responded with a
Leroy Nobles corner three at the other end.
The teams traded two empty trips each until Snead tied the game with 32 seconds left on a tough layup in traffic.
Given an opportunity for the final shot, IUPUI melted the clock down but saw Avery misfire on a wing three as time expired.
The overtime period featured two ties and three lead changes, but IPFW looked as though it had the game in hand with a four-point lead and the ball with 1:10 left. However, Plackemeier missed the front end of a one-and-one and Nobles stroked his second three of the game with 31.1 seconds left. After a timeout, IPFW's Nick Daniels split a pair of free throws with 16.7 seconds to play.
Young scored the game-tying bucket out of a timeout before Plackemeier hit the game-winner. It was the second time in three games at Conseco the Jags had lost on a last second jumper.
Avery paced IUPUI with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench. Senior
Robert Glenn recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds before fouling out with 2:57 left in overtime. Nobles and Ashworth scored 10 each but Young was held to a season-low six points on just 3-of-12 shooting.
IUPUI shot just 38.6 percent overall and 23.8 percent from three.
Trey McCorkle led the 'Dons with 14 points and Plackemeier finished with 13. IPFW had similar struggles shooting the basketball, hitting 44.2 percent overall and 27.3 percent from deep. The victors also made just 10-of-23 (.435) from the foul line.
The loss snapped IUPUI's nine-game winning streak over IPFW and was just the second home defeat of the season.
Hunter's team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 when it travels to Macomb, Ill. to take on Western Illinois. Tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. EST with pregame coverage beginning at approximately 7:50.
