INDIANAPOLIS - Senior
Robert Glenn scored 26 points and sophomore
Alex Young notched his first career double-double as IUPUI overpowered Oakland, 78-54 in the Jungle on Thursday night. The win was IUPUI's sixth-in-a-row and snapped OU's Summit League winning streak at 16, leaving them tied for the league's all-time record.
It was Oakland's first loss since a Dec. 22 defeat at No. 5 Syracuse.
IUPUI (16-7, 9-1 Summit) outrebounded the taller Golden Grizzlies 46-26 overall and outscored OU 58-24 in the paint. The Jaguars established its interior presence from the outset, getting two early layups from Glenn over OU center Keith Benson, sandwiched around a
Jon Avery 5-footer to build an early 6-0 lead.
"In the past few times we've played them, Oakland has physically just beaten us up. They've absolutely taken it to us," IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter said. "Tonight, we wanted to land the first punch, rather than absorb one. We worked hard all week and talked about really playing hard and crashing the boards. We knew we had to block them out and really get after it on the glass to have a shot."
After a timeout, OU (15-8, 9-1 Summit) regained some composure and tied the game at 10 and 12 all before the Jags used an 8-1 run to make it 20-13 with 11:03 left before halftime. Hunter's team maintained a two possession advantage nearly the entire first half thanks to unselfish ball movement and nifty finishes around the basket. Glenn and Avery repeatedly got free inside and used the basket to shield the 6-foot-11 Benson away defensively.
After taking a 36-30 halftime lead, the Jaguars methodically pulled away in the second half and led by double-digits the final 15:17 of the game after a quick 7-0 burst. Young epitomized the night on the first basket of the run, missing two threes that both resulted in offensive rebounds. Given a third crack, Young drove through the middle and banked home a layup to put IUPUI up 43-34. Avery followed with a tip-in two trips later and Glenn capped the rally with a three-point play.
IUPUI shot 56.1 percent from the floor and had 22 assists on 32 baskets. The Jags, who came in ranked 11th in the country in three-point shooting, all but abandoned the long range game, opting to attack the Oakland big men on the inside.
"I think our big guys were embarrassed by how they played in the second half up at Oakland," Hunter said. "Tonight, they wanted to show that they could play with them. Billy (Pettiford) was tremendous on the glass and Alex (Young) did a good job getting to the ball. That's what they're capable of."
Pettiford finished with a season-high 13 rebounds and seven assists and Young closed with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-6 swingman was 0-of-6 from three, but hit 8-of-11 shot attempts inside the arc. Glenn's monster game included hitting 11-of-13 shots and collecting five rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals.
Avery, who had to enter in the game's first minute due to an injury to
Leroy Nobles, hit 9-of-13 shots to account for his 18 points.
"Jon Avery gave us a huge lift off the bench, and that's what we need him to do," Hunter said. "He's really crafty around the rim and just has a nose for scoring the basketball."
Derick Nelson led Oakland with 15 points, 14 of which game in the first 15 minutes of the game. Larry Wright added 12 on 5-of-13 shooting. Benson, who came in ranked third in The Summit in scoring and first in rebounding, had just seven points and seven rebounds on 2-of-4 shooting. Oakland shot just 33.9 percent overall and 26.3 percent from three.
IUPUI improved to 9-1 at home this season and moved into a first-place tie with Oakland in The Summit League standings. The Jaguars will cap the two-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts IPFW at Conseco Fieldhouse at 2:00 p.m..
