KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The IUPUI basketball team trailed virtually the entire night and saw host UMKC come up empty on two potential game-winning shot attempts on the final possession before escaping Municipal Auditorium with a 65-64 win on Saturday. The Jaguars held UMKC without a point over the final 4:39, but scored just two points offensively during that stretch to squeak out the win.
The victory ran the Jags' winning streak to five straight and six-in-a-row over UMKC.
Trailing 64-63, IUPUI went three straight trips without a score until senior
Robert Glenn tied the game with 1:12 left by splitting a pair of free throws. The Jaguars got a fourth straight defensive stand when LaTreze Mushatt missed a contested layup and proceeded to go in front on the next possession. Sophomore
Alex Young drew a foul when driving to the bucket with 37.7 seconds left and hit the second of two foul shots.
IUPUI (15-7, 8-1 Summit) called a 30-second timeout to prepare its defense and watched as Bakari Lewis misfired from three with 14 seconds left. However, UMKC (9-10, 3-5 Summit) retained the ball when the rebound went out of bounds off a Jag with 10.1 ticks left. Both teams called timeouts to set their troops, but freshman Kirk Korver missed a potential game-winning 26-footer on the final play.
"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it. We did a lot of things that could have and probably should have cost us this basketball game. We missed free throws; we missed some assignments on defense. We were just really, really fortunate to get out of here with a win," IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter said. "This is a really difficult road trip, so we're just happy to be heading back to Indianapolis with a couple of wins."
Glenn led IUPUI with 18 points and eight rebounds and Young scored 17 on an uncharacteristically poor shooting night. The lefty hit just 5-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-8 from the foul line. Overall, IUPUI made just 17-of-29 (.586) from the free throw line.
IUPUI led 5-4 just over two minutes in when Young rained in a three, but UMKC came back with a Spencer Johnson three and held the lead for nearly the next 30 minutes. The Kangaroos led 38-31 at halftime and pushed their lead out to 11 with 12:45 left. Johnson scored six straight points with a long distance triple and traditional three-point play, making it 54-43. Refusing to go away, Hunter's team came back with a quick 9-0 run capped by a Young three, making it 54-52 at the 10:40 mark.
The Jaguars finally took their first lead of the second half with 5:50 left when Glenn scored on a spin move set up by a pass from
Billy Pettiford. It was the first of five lead changes in the final six minutes.
"Rob (Glenn) was our great equalizer tonight. When we needed a bucket, we threw it in to him. He just has a knack for either putting the ball in the basket or getting to the free throw line," Hunter said.
The 2009 Summit League Newcomer of the Year was 7-of-10 from the floor and went his second straight game without a turnover as the Jags matched their season-low with just eight miscues. Pettiford had six points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals as third leading scorer
Leroy Nobles was held to eight points.
The Jaguars' bench provided a shot in the arm as both
Jon Avery and
Greg Rice scored eight each and combined to go 7-of-10 from the floor.
Jay Couisnard led UMKC with 22 points and eight rebounds and Trey McKinney-Jones scored 15 before fouling out. Johnson had 12, but also fouled out in the final minutes.
IUPUI hit 10-of-18 second half field goal attempts to finish the game shooting 45.8 percent overall. UMKC made just 42.1 percent from the floor, but was 9-of-25 (36 percent) from three.
The Jaguars closed the first half of their Summit League slate with an 8-1 mark and will host undefeated Oakland in The Jungle on Thursday night. Representatives from the American Red Cross and the IUPUI International Affairs Office will be on hand to collect donations for the university's Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts. Subscription video and free audio will be available via the web as Scott McCauley (play-by-play) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Jared Lux (analyst) will call the action. Coverage will begin at approximately 6:50 for the 7:00 p.m. tip.
