INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team squandered some offensive opportunities and yielded a late penalty kick on its way to a 1-0 loss to Valparaiso on a picturesque Sunday afternoon at Kuntz Stadium.
A Jaguars' defender was whistled for holding a Valparaiso attacker well inside the 18-yard box, setting up a penalty kick for Jackie Kondratko with just 3:32 left to play. The Valpo (1-3) senior chipped her shot into the right half of the net, easily past IUPUI goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell for the game's only score.
The PK capped a match in which both squads missed opportunities to take an earlier advantage.
Kondratko had the best scoring chance of the match in the 48th minute when she was played in behind the IUPUI defense, but saw her shot roll harmlessly wide of the right post after getting past Farrell. At the other end, IUPUI (0-2) began to create some chances later in the second half against the physical VU defense.
Sophomore
Chelsi McHenry got loose on a breakaway from the right side but VU goalkeeper Mele Cabral made a sliding stop of her attempt in the 68th minute. The rebound came free to freshman
Lisa Thomas, but her drive sailed high of the crossbar.
IUPUI's best chance of the match came in the 78th minute when
Alicia Brock worked through the Valpo defense to set up a one-on-one with Cabral. After maneuvering past the VU keeper, Brock's tough angle shot from the left side was knocked off path by a retreating defender.
Valpo outshot IUPUI 10-8, but managed just two shots on goal as Farrell finished with one save. Cabral made three stops at the other end in the shutout.
Kondratko attempted four shots and McHenry led IUPUI with three attempts.
"We're sitting here at 0-2 and we should be 2-0," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We've got to find ways to win games. We're not playing bad - we're playing well. We're creating opportunities for ourselves, we're just not putting them away.
"It just isn't good enough right now. It's good, but not good enough."
IUPUI returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Butler for a non-conference match. Tuesday's contest was a reschedule of last Friday's match at Butler as lightning forced the game to be postponed. The two teams were tied at 1-1 early in the second half when lightning in the area forced play to be stopped. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com.
