INDIANAPOLIS - North Dakota State connected on 56 percent of its field goal attempts and 13 treys on its way to an emphatic 91-69 win over IUPUI on Saturday night in The Jungle. The Bison hit 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from downtown and handed IUPUI its worst home loss since the 2002-03 season.
It was also the most points allowed by the Jaguars in a non-overtime game since the NCAA Tournament game against Kentucky in 2003. It also snapped IUPUI's four-game Summit League winning streak.
"They're a really good basketball team, but we made them look like world beaters tonight," IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said. "They've playing at an incredibly high level and we didn't match them.
"It's frustrating and it's disappointing. We've got to get better and get back to playing unselfish basketball."
IUPUI (13-11, 6-7 Summit) sophomore Adrian Moss scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and junior forward Jon Avery matched him for team-high honors. Brett Winkelman and Mike Nelson tallied 22 apiece for NDSU (18-5, 12-1) and Michael Tveidt added 19, having tied his career-high with five triples.
The win was NDSU's tenth straight and gave the guests a season sweep over the Jaguars.
The Jaguars got the game's opening bucket on a driving layup from Moss, but NDSU (18-5, 12-1) reeled off a 9-2 run and took command from there. Summit League Preseason Player of the Year Ben Woodside swished three straight first half threes to help push the lead out to 18-10 and IUPUI got no closer than seven the rest of the night.
Despite shooting 52 percent in the first half, IUPUI trailed heading into the lockerroom by a 48-33 score. the assault continued as the lead opener up to 22 on a Tveidt three with 14:43 left and was unable to make a significant dent from there.
Avery hit 6-of-8 shots for his sixth straight double-digit scoring night and junior Robert Glenn made just 4-of-12 attempts to close with 12. Meanwhile, senior Gary Patterson tallied five to close with 1,000 points in his collegiate career. He's now scored 945 in an IUPUI uniform and scored 55 as a freshman at Butler in 2004-05.
Woodside, coming off an 0-of-12 shooting night, scored 15 points and handed out eight of the Bison' 21 assists. The guests turned the ball over just six times.
IUPUI now hits the road for a critical two-game stretch, beginning in Shreveport, La. against Centenary on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST with XL 950's pregame coverage beginning at 7:30.
