INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Robert Glenn dropped in a right-handed layup with 7.7 seconds remaining to hand IUPUI a 57-55 win over IPFW in The Jungle on Thursday night. He and fellow junior Jon Avery combined to hit 15-of-22 shots and score 36 points in the victory.

Opting not to call a timeout on the ensuing possession, IPFW was unable to get off a shot before the final buzzer.

"It was an exciting finish," Avery said. "You want to be able to get the win in close games like that."

IUPUI (15-12, 8-8 Summit) had a three-point lead with 1:40 left when Glenn split a pair of free throws but Jakari Johnson erased it by draining a three from the top of the key at the other end. IUPUI sophomore Leroy Nobles put the Jags back on top with a 14-footer at the 1:01 mark, but IPFW (10-16, 5-10) tied the game with 34.1 seconds left when Zach Plackemeier was fouled on a short jumper and hit both freebies.

IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter decided to not call a timeout and Adrian Moss and Billy Pettiford dribbled out 20 seconds before giving the ball to Glenn on the right wing. Glenn offered a couple of ball fakes before driving to his right and banking home the game winner from the right block.

"I decided not to call a timeout because I think my team is better when I just let them play in that situation," Hunter said. "We wanted to get the ball to Rob and let him make a play. He was aggressive in going to the basket - we thought he would either score it or get fouled.

"You have to credit him - he made a big play."

Glenn played the entire second half with three personal fouls, but hit 7-of-12 shots on his way to a game-high 19 points. Avery netted 12 of his 17 before halftime and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Nobles also finished in double-digits, hitting 7-of-12 shots to score 16 points.

The Jaguars used its superior length and athleticism to claim a 38-20 scoring edge in the paint.

"I thought Jon Avery was really good tonight," Hunter said. "He did the dirty work at both ends. He got offensive rebounds and steals and helped us get some defensive stops."

Defensive stops weren't a problem for the Jaguars in the opening stanza. Avery and Glenn combined to score IUPUI's first 18 points as the Jags built an 18-8 lead in the first 12 minutes. At one point, IPFW had just one made field goal and seven turnovers.

IPFW got back within five at 19-14 before the Jaguars took a 25-16 lead to the locker room. The Mastodons turned the tables in the second half, surging ahead 37-34 with 11:46 left before Glenn tied the game with a dunk and free throw coming out of the under-12 media timeout.

Nobles hit two threes in a three-minute stretch to push the lead back out to five before IPFW pulled back even.

The Jaguars shot an efficient 49 percent from the field, but Thursday's win was a stark contrast to the earlier win in Fort Wayne. Almost one month prior, the Jaguars used an all-out aerial assault to jump on the 'Dons 21-4 in the opening minutes. The Jags finished the game having hit 10 threes, six coming from Gary Patterson

On Saturday, IUPUI made just 2-of-10 and Patterson was held scoreless.

"They didn't give us many looks from the outside, but we knew we had an advantage in the paint," Hunter said. "We wanted to get Rob (Glenn) and Jon (Avery) a lot of touches inside. That was our gameplan."

IPFW, The Summit League's top three-point shooting team, made just 40 percent from the field and 4-of-13 from beyond the arc. The 'Dons also turned the ball over 16 times, 10 coming off Jaguar steals.

Nick Daniels led IPFW with 13 points and Deilvez Yearby added 12 points and five boards off the bench. The 'Dons top scorer, David Carson, picked up two quick fouls in the first half and finished with just eight points in 24 minutes.

IUPUI will now cap its home schedule on Saturday night when it hosts Oakland at 7:00 p.m.. The basketball program will be recognizing its lone senior, Patterson, prior to that contest. In addition, those bringing a canned food item for the Summit League Food Fight will receive a free IUPUI t-shirt, while supplies last.
