Box Score
TULSA, Okla. - Despite shooting 48 percent from the floor, IUPUI was unable to come up with key conversions in the second half as the Jaguars lost to Oral Roberts, 71-60. Junior
Robert Glenn scored 23, one shy of his career-high, and
Leroy Nobles and
Alex Young tallied 13 each in the loss.
ORU (13-13, 11-3 Summit) got 23 points from Robert Jarvis and 14 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Marcus Lewis as it ran its home conference winning streak to 34 straight.
IUPUI (14-12, 7-8) trailed 61-58 with 3:35 left when Glenn powered his way down the right side of the lane before flipping in a layup, but Jarvis answered with a 12-foot floater at the other end. Young committed a costly turnover when his cross court pass sailed over the head of Nobles with 2:52 left, giving the Golden Eagles possession.
ORU made the most of it when Jarvis swished a 25-foot jumper from the right wing, essentially sealing the win, despite behind hounded by Nobles.
"They made shots," IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter said. "Again, they made shots when they needed them and we didn't execute down the stretch. I thought we'd need to score in the seventies to win and we didn't get there tonight.
"I thought Rob (Glenn) was phenomenal, but we didn't give him much help."
Glenn made 10-of-16 shots, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals, but ORU's interior trio of Lewis, Kevin Ford and Andre Hardy helped the Golden Eagles claim a 36-22 rebounding advantage. It was IUPUI's largest rebounding deficit of the season. Twelve of the Golden Eagles' rebounds came off the offensive glass, while the Jags only grabbed six offensive boards. ORU also had a decisive edge at the foul line, hitting 21-of-31 (67.7 percent) against IUPUI's 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) night.
IUPUI led 21-18 with 5:37 left in the first half, but the Golden Eagles responded with an 11-1 run to grab a seven point lead. The Jaguars cut the lead back to 32-27 by halftime as Nobles hit an open three from the top of the key and a driving layup on the final possession.
The Jags took a brief 35-33 lead with 17:17 lead when Young swished a three, but the Golden Eagles later reeled off a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.
Young hit 5-of-10 shots, including 3-of-6 from deep, to account for his 13 points. Nobles hit 6-of-14, but added three assists and two steals. The rest of the IUPUI cast hit a combined 3-of-10 shots, totaling 11 points. Most notably, senior
Gary Patterson was limited to just three points on 1-of-5 shooting in 40 minutes work. The 5-foot-10 sharpshooter swished a three on the opening possession of the second half, but was unable to get clean looks because of a myriad of ORU defenders.
IUPUI hit 24-of-50 from the field, but just 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from three. Conversely, ORU sank 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from beyond the arc to help offset 21 turnovers.
Jarvis hit 4-of-8 from three and freshman Dominique Morrison hit 3-of-5 threes and finished with 11 points. The loss gave Oral Roberts a series sweep over the Jaguars as IUPUI fell to 3-8 all-time at the Mabee Center.
"We need to get home, get two good home crowds and pick up two wins," Hunter said. "That's our focus now - getting past IPFW. I still think we're playing good basketball, we just need to get all of our cylinders going."
IUPUI's season ending two-game homestand begins with the Mastodons on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with XL 950's pregame coverage beginning at 6:30.
