DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Alex Young capped a career-high 22-point effort with an emphatic three-point play to energize the Jaguars to a 67-56 overtime win over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon at the third annual Glenn Wilkes Classic inside Ocean Arena. After giving the ball away on IUPUI’s first possession in overtime and then compounding the mistake by allowing a three-point play at the other end, Young immediately atoned for the mistake on the next trip.

The 6-foot-6 swingman caught a pass on the left wing and drove hard to the rim, hammering home a left-handed dunk while drawing a foul on GSU’s Ousman Krubally in the process. Young swished the ensuing free throw to tie the game and re-energize his squad which was playing its fourth game in five days.

“That was the play of the tournament to me,” IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said. “He knew he made a mistake with the turnover, but you could see in his eyes that he wanted to make up for it. He’s got a little bit of a nasty streak in him and we’d been telling him to attack the rim.

“That just lifted everyone up from that point on.”

The rejuvenated Jaguars hit all three of its field goals and 10-of-11 from the foul line in overtime, outscoring GSU (2-3) 17-6 in the extra session.

Seven of John Ashworth’s season-high 14 came in overtime including a go-ahead three from the left corner with 3:54 left.

The entire 45 minutes were a slugfest as the Jaguars had to endure five missed GSU attempts in the final two minutes of regulation just to make it to overtime. Ashworth put IUPUI up 50-49 with 2:05 left on a 14-footer, but the Jaguars wouldn’t get another possession the rest of the way.

GSU guard Joe Dukes tied the score by hitting the first of two free throws and teammate Trey Hampton corralled the miss for the Panthers to keep possession with 1:32 to play. Dukes missed an uncontested three from in front of his own bench, but Hampton came up with the board. The burly GSU pivot missed a putback opportunity, but rebounded his own miss before kicking it out and getting a timeout from his bench.

Out of the timeout, the Jaguars remained solid on defense, allowing Dukes another uncontested three which clanked hard off the iron. GSU’s Trae Goldston grabbed the long rebound with the shot clock off, giving the Panthers the final look. After a timeout and two IUPUI personal fouls, Robert Glenn swatted Goldston’s final attempt at the buzzer, forcing overtime.

“It was really an agonizing stretch for us,” Hunter said. “We kept getting them to take the shots we wanted, we just had a hard time getting the long rebounds. Part of that was being 120 minutes of basketball for our kids at that point.

“Our defense kept them off the boards all day long but they’re a great rebounding team. That was the scouting report on them – we had to keep them off the offensive glass.”

Dukes led GSU with 14 points, five assists and five steals and Krubally added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Glenn was the only other Jag to reach double-digits, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting. Young and Glenn were both named to the Glenn Wilkes Classic All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event.

Both teams shot under 40 percent overall and under 30 percent from beyond the arc in the game.

For the first 20 minutes, the two teams did a role reversal, playing to a 26 all tie. The Jaguars crashed the glass, grabbing eight offensive boards to create second chances. On the other side, Georgia State hit shots, comparative speaking. The Panthers shot 41 percent in the first half while the Jags limped to a 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) mark.

Glenn scored eight points in succession midway through the stanza and Young carried the load late, scoring six of his nine in the final 6:28.
