DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The IUPUI basketball team got a game-high 20 points from sophomore Alex Young and used a 16-2 first half run to help polish off Austin Peay, 77-63 inside the Ocean Center as part of the third annual Glenn Wilkes Classic on Friday night. Young's 20 matched his career-high as IUPUI opened the year 3-0 for the first time since 2003.

After a lethargic start, IUPUI flipped a four-point deficit into a 10-point lead over an eight minute stretch, getting scoring contributions from five different players along the way.

IUPUI had a 34-24 lead at halftime and quickly opened the second half with a 7-0 run to put the game away.

"We started hitting our shots," IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said. "It wasn't necessarily something we did different to get us going, we just got settled in and started making shots. We've got a lot of good players on this basketball team and we can hit you from a lot of different directions. Tonight, Alex did a good job of taking the ball to the rim to create some easy shots."

Young scored 15 of his season-high 20 after halftime including eight over the final 4:09 as APSU (1-2) frenetically tried to make it a game. IUPUI's lead grew to 61-37 with 9:24 left when Sean Esposito swished a three from the left baseline corner, but the Governors got within 10 on an assortment of Eric Mosley late trifectas. However, Young thwarted any thoughts of a comeback by scoring easy layups after breaking the Govs' full-court press.

Young hit 7-of-13 shots and added a pair of steals in just 21 minutes work. Senior Robert Glenn scored 10 of his 17 in the first half and hit all seven of his free throw attempts. Both Leroy Nobles and Jon Avery scored 11 each with the latter snagging a game-high nine boards off the IUPUI bench.

Junior John Ashworth continued his strong play at the point, collecting six points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

IUPUI shot 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded Austin Peay 38-36. The Jaguars' assortment of big men fueled a 42-20 scoring advantage in the paint.

"We did a good job of beating them down the court and getting some easy opportunities," Hunter said. "Our bigs can really get out and run and that makes them really hard to guard. Plus, it was good for us to show that we can win when the threes aren't falling for us."

IUPUI came in shooting 46 percent from beyond the arc through two games, but hit just 2-of-10 on Friday.

Mosley led APSU with 12 points in just 10 minutes off the bench and Anthony Campbell and Tyrone Caldwell added 11 each.  The Govs' top scorer, Wesley Channels, was held to just four points on 1-of-13 shooting from the floor. Overall, Austin Peay made just 32 percent from the field and 9-of-27 from three.

"I liked some of the things we did defensively," Hunter said. "We identified their shooters pretty well and did a good job of closing out on them."

The win was IUPUI's first-ever over APSU in the third meeting in the all-time series.

IUPUI will return to action on Saturday night when it takes on Auburn in its third of four games in the Glenn Wilkes Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with live audio being available via IUPUIJags.com. Scott McCauley (play-by-play) will call the action beginning at approximately 5:45 p.m..
